NOTES OF THE TURF The regular California winter racing season begins Saturday next with the opening at the beautiful Oakland track While the bulk of the eastern horses that will be campaigned over the San Francisco tracks have not as yet been started overland there is no lack of good rac race ¬ ing King material already on band several hundred horses being stabled at the Oakland and Ingle side tracks Juaoph Jalopy V Murphy will act as presfding presiding judge at Oakland with John J Carter and J W Brooks as associates while the only J B Ferguson will as usual attend to the starting Mr Brooks will also discharge the duties of clerk of the scales and handicap per As to Ingleside Ingles it is reported that Edward Smith of Sacramento secretary of The State Fair Association will be the presiding judge with Harry Kuhl Kohl as one of the associates A season of racing fully as prosperous and inter ¬ esting besting as that of last year is confidently antici antic ¬ pated patted patedSecretary Secretary J W Russwurm Russ was in Cincinnati Tuesday and gave the Enquirer the following information concerning the coming Nashville meeting Racing on the Canadian circuit will come to a close Saturday and about 250 horses will go from Windsor to Nashville While here yesterday Mr Russwurm Russ had assurance from a number of the owners now racing at Latonia Antonia that they will ship to Nashville within the next few days The same parties who are in control at Windsor will give the meeting at Nashville Glenn Co have bought the bet ¬ ting privileges and will operate the ring and Jake Holtman Oilman whose work at Windsor is re ¬ ported to be first class will do the starting Mr Russwurm Russ considers the prospects for a successful meeting at Cumberland Park good goodWill Will Woodard Woodward accompanied by his light ¬ weight jockey Dupee Dupe arrived at Latonia Antonia Tues ¬ day from Chicago Simon W Agitator and Hats Off his horses also arrived and are quar quark ¬ tered termed at Latonia Antonia Woodard Woodward raced in the east all summer and had a very successful cam ¬ paign pain At the close of the Latonia Antonia meeting he will ship his stable to New Orleans OrleansOwing Foreknowing Owing to the unfavorable weather it has been decided to close the Windsor meeting to ¬ day instead of next Saturday This decision will give the turfmen Turkmen at Windsor ample time to ship their horses to Nashville and rest them a few days before the opening of racing there thereJ there J S Quinton of Philadelphia and a party of capitalists are to start a big breeding establish ¬ ment meant near Trenton N J They will be in the market for breeding stock and have bought the mares Peg Woffington Offing and Divide both in foal to Meddler MeddlerN Meddler N Turner has signed a sixmonths sixteenths contract to ride for Kid Weller Dweller and will go to San Francico Francisco along with the letters string of a dozen or so horses among which are Hugh Penny Don Quixote Harry Gaines and Button ButtonJockey Buttonhook Jockey C Combs who ran away from St Lonis Lois and Tomlinson Tompkins Co last summer has repented and rejoined his employers at Latonia Antonia He has been forgiven and will ride for the stable at Latonia Antonia and Now Orleans OrleansApparently Apparently John J McCafferty intends to cut a wide swath at New Orleans To his other recent purchases he has added the speedy fillies Lilian Lillian Bell 3 and Frances Booker 2 prices private privateLittle private Little OConnor O'Connor who has done so much good riding for Father Bill Daly Dally has been engaged as lightweight for 1899 by Fleischmann Freshman Sons SonsJ Sons J W Colt has bought Dr Catlott Calotte and Rinal Urinal do II from Turney Tourney Bros Brows at private sale
