GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Fridays San Francisco Chronicle says: "Vicksburg" Wood, well known on every racetrack in the country, is in trouble. "Vicksburg" for the past couple of years has acted as betting commissioner for Dan Burns or Clarence Waterhouse, and sometimes placed a bet for President Tom Williams. He enjoyed the confidence of his employers and was liked among racegoers. Yesterday Deputy Sheriff Lane arrested "Vicksburg" at the track and took him to the county jail in Oakland, where the charge of suspicion of felony is marked opposite his name. It is alleged that "Vicksburg" bet "markers" with several bookmakers to the extent of 00, claiming that the bets were for Tom Williams. The president of the Jockey Club cannot recall making any such bets and thinks that "Vicksburg" has been speculating on his own account. It is hard to understand how "Vicksburg" would have benefited, as the books do not usually pay tha "markers" to betting commissioners. George C. Bennett has fourteen well bred 2-year-olds in schooling at Memphis, of which Joe Wheeler, by Iroquois Hildegarde, is at present deemed the pick. Bay filly, by Wadsworth Norma. The Gentlemens Cup at Ingloside must be won three times before it becomes the property of any of the competitors. Walter Hobart and , Frank Skinner have each been twice first for the coveted trophy. The decisive contest will probably take place during the coming two weeks at Ingleside and speculation as to the result is already strong.
