NOTES OF THE TDBF. The usual early crop of rumors about two-year-old wonders begins to show up. Two fillies trained by Henry McDaniels at Lexington are credited with having worked a quarter in 23J seconds. One is by Wagner Glenbelle; the other by Likely Sallie Marshall. Sallio Marshall is a full sister to Yictorino, the dam of Ornament. At the same track a filly by Tea Tray Islette is reported to having given signs of being a crackerjack. F. P. Kidd is also credited with having a good one in the chestnut Illy by Hanover Shadow Dance. A dispatch from New Orleans says that as the result of a conference there Thursday between Frank Fowler and George C. Bennett it was decided that racing will begin at Newport Saturday, April 8, and continue until Friday, May 19. This means that Newport will clash with Memphis, Nashville, Louisville and with Lex i ington, if any meeting is to be held at the latter point. No decision as to racing officials was arrived at. The meeting will cover thirty- six racing days. In the columns of the London Sportsman there are no less than 120 thoroughbred stallions advertised for the season of 1899. St. Simon is the only one of the swells of the harem whose name is not on the list. Isinglass fee is 300 guineas, or ,500. Sheen, a son of Hampton, to approved mares at 200 guineas. Common at 200 guineas, Royal Hampton 150 guineas, and a host at 100 guineas, so that a fashionable stallion in England is a pretty good paying property. Mr. Whitneys stallions, Meddler and Lissak, and his fine collection of costly broodmares are to be located on Mr. H. P. Headleys, La Belle Farm, formerly the property of Engene Leigh. Mr. Headley, for the time being, will look after the well being of Mr. Whitneys band of equine aristocrats, a circumstance that insures their being well taken care of. The English Racing Calendar of 1898 gives the following record of the distances of races run in Great Britain in the year just ended: five furlongs and under six, 822; six furlongs and under one mile, 232; one mile, 556: more than one mile and under two, 228; two miles and under three, 53; three miles and under four, 8; four miles, 2. There is a rumor going about that, owing to the pressure of his other affairs in connection with racing, Mr. H. G. Crickmore may not serve as Clerk of the Scale? in 1899, and that his place may be filled by a gentleman formerly connected with the details of the management of Morris Park. Horse Fancier. H. Martin has signed a contract to ride for T. H. Ryan during 1S99. Martin is riding in remarkably fine form at present and if he keeps up his present gait will be well to the front when the year closes. His five straight wins at Ingleside Wednesday was a remarkable exhibition of good jockeyship. The 3-year-olds, Glenheim, Manuel and Ken. tucky Colonel, the joint property of Messrs. A. H. and D. H. Morris and R. W. Walden, are entered in the name and colors of the Bowling Brook Stable for all their future engagements. The mares Olive and Mamie Scott, each frequently a winner over the San Francisco tracks, are to be retired and will be mated with Magnet shortly. Mamie Scott holds the worlds record at seven and a half furlongs. George Murphy, Memphis, Tonn., has sent from McGrathiana Stud to Louisville for training these colts: Ch. c, 2, by Watercress Rosalind ;br. c, 2, by Strathmore Lilith; blk. c. 2, Hindoo Gammacita. The Australian-bred horse, Pounatnu, by New-minster Beryl, sold by Spencer Gollan to the Russian Government, will go into the stud under the name Marshal Saxe. Milton Young, has purchased from Capt. S. S. Brown the broodmares Senorita, Sunbeam Matinee, Galop and Sunsot. All these mares are in foal to Troubadour. Tho three-year-old colt Martello, by Morello Santella, was so badly cut down in the fourth race at Ingleside Thursday that he had to be destroyed. Enquirer, Cleveland, O. The Sharkey-McCoy fight lasted ten rounds. The bet that it would last ten rounds was won when the tenth round began. N. Turner has engaged to ride for Eugene Leigh this year.
