GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Miles Finlan of Butte, Mont., a member of the Montana legislature and owner of Lucky Star, now in winter quarters at Latonia, spent a few profitable months in Chicago last fall. J. K. Redmon trains the horse. At Harlem October 1, last, Lucky Star won a seven furlong race in a field of fifteen and Finlen won 5,000 over his victory. In a recent talk the Montana man said: "I won 5,000 on it. I got as good as 10 to 1 for most of my money, and played it in a number of other cities. My horse was backed down to 2 to 1 and 11 to 5 at the post. I was surprised at the odds. The bookmakers didnt know that he had won eight straight races in Montana, and beaten such horses as Ostler Joe and Rublcou, and I am glad of it. It is only a little over a year since I wouldnt have given a cigar for tho horse. " By Holly, who is dead, poor fellow, got him out of a selling race at Frisco for 00. At Denver the horse began to improve, and when he got to Montana he was so good that parties followed to try to take him away from Holly, who was short of money. Knowing this, Holly sold him to me for ,500. I dont know how good he is. He may not have much class, but he had not lost a race since I owned him and that makes mo think pretty well of him. His improvement in a year sbows how horses can vary, and it is possible he may go back where he was then." A sals of racehorses in training was held in the Now Orleans paddock previous to the races last Saturday.
