GOSSIP OF THIS TURF. Speaking of tho two-yoar-olds that will contend for the ,000 Washington Nursery Stakes i at Bennings next month the Horse Fancier says: "This rather nice plum looks like being : captured by whatever represents the Morris t , I i ! i i : and Walden Stables, they having no less than seven to pick from. The chestnut filly by St. a Florian Holiday was very highly tried last fall. The others now in training at Bowling 1 Brook which are eligible in the Nursery are Specific, b. c, by St. Florian Specialty; Prince i of Verona, b. c, by Cayuga Veronia ; Caout-choucine, b. c, by Galore Issaquena; Oleaster, b. f, by Galore Oleviok; Merrily, br. f, by Galore Merry One; C. T. Pattersons highly- tried Lamplighter Harebell colt is eligible, but as he has stake engagements in the west, is not likely to be seen at Bennings. D. S. Quinton has a smart filly in the Fonso Lillian Beatrice filly. J J. Hyland has a nursery bred one in thech g, by Rayon dOr Red Girl. P. J. Dwyer has a couple of Hanover colts engaged, but it is doubtful if they will be on edge so early in the season. The close of tho present two weeks of racing at Oakland, tomorrow, will be signalized by the decision of two stake events, tho Racing Stakes, at half a mile, for two-year-olds, and the Lissak Stakes, one mile, for three-year-olds. Both stakes are invested with considerable interest: Corrigans Golden Rule and St. Anthony, Marcus Dalys crack filly Ella Boland, and Burns and Waterhouses Merry Mouth are expected to go to the post, and "Lucky" Baldwin will probably furnish a new point of interest by starting one or more of the lot recently sent up from Santa Anita. Olinthus, First Tenor, Humidity, Corsini, Maud Ferguson, Saintly, Miss Marion, Formero, Horton, Yentoro and Lime Water are among the eligibles for the Lissak Stakes, and it looks like furnishing a good contest. The decision of the California Derby is now so close at hand that the "Native Sons" watch every performance of the three-year-olds with close attention, and it may be that the Lissak will furnish what may be deemed a clue to the outcome of the Derby. The last declaration from the Kentucky Derby were due Wednesday. It will not be known for some days yet how many three-year-olds are left in, bat it is known that Manuel, The Eentuckian, The Barrister, His Lordship, The Lady In Blue, Manlius, Deering, W. Overton, Mazo and Wertheim have had their final payments made. Galen Brown has turned his two-year-old Diomed out. He is a full brother to Olinthus, Sutton and Digga, bat his knees are weak and Brown concluded it was best to give him a chance to grow and strengthen before starting him after fame and dollars.
