NOTES OF THE TURF. Two English-bred stallions bought by Mr. J . B. Haggin for use at Elmendorf arrived in New York Tuesday on the steamer Marquetto. They are Arkle, b. h, 5, by Arklow Angelica and Shopfell, b. c, 4, by Kendal Angelica. Both are of tho richest breeding and should prove great acquisitions. Angelica is a full sister to the famous St. Simon and the dam of the successful stallion Ordor, sire of Ornament. Arklow is a full brother to the unbeaten Ormonde. The horses were bought on commission for Mr. Haggin by Horace Theobald. Burns and Waterhouse may be represented by Obsidian in the California Derby instead of First Tenor. From reliable sources it is learned First Tenor has not been doing as well as ho might. In his last gallop he acted sore, and didnt want to run a bit. Obsidian is in much better condition. He likes a distance, and can support heavy weight, such as they will all be asked to carry in this event. John Madden has bought from Gas Straus the threo-year-old colt Mazo, by Rossington Rona B. Ho was recently bought from Welch and Co. by Straus. He is in tho Kentucky Derby and his purchase by such a shrewd owner aa Madden is indication that the latter thinks he has a chance to win that event, an idea that some of his races last year would confirm, Americas is still in training in England, This horse is now six years old and ran in this coun- try under tho name of Roy dol Carrodes,
