GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Saturdays San Francisco Examiner says of the H. Taylor ruling off case : "H. Moose Taylor, once one of the best lightweight jockeys in America, was yesterday ruled off the turf by the stewards of the California Jockey Club. Taylor is said to have endeavored to lay up Ulm with a bookmaker. W. H. Martin had the mount on Finks horse on the occasion in question, and Taylors downfall is directly attributable to the investigation which followed the recent suspension of Martin. It is said by the stewards that Taylor approached an unnamed person and asked if ho knew of a bookmaker who would lay against Ulm. The matter came to the ears of the judges and as they had before received complaints of the sort regarding the former jockey, they ruled him off. " Moose denies that he ever did anything wrong during his turf career. He says he never pulled a horse or connived at wrongdoing, and that as for W. H. Martin, he would not know him should he meet him. He advances in proof of the assertion, that he has not been implicated in any dishonest procedure-that he has not a dollar and has, since the Baldwin Hotel fire, subsisted on the charity of friends, who supplied him not only with money with which to procure food, but also purchased him clothing." English exchanges announce the death of the noted Hermit mare, Shotover. The Field of February 25 says : "This broodmare was shot at the Eaton stud a few days ago. Shotover was by Hermit and was bred by Mr. Chaplin in 1879. As a three-year-old she won the Two Thousand Guineas and the Derby, her money record for the season being 12,205. She was one of the three mares that have won the Derby during the prevent century, her two predecessors being Blink Bonny in 1857 and Eleanor in 1801. The death is also announced of the Duke of Westminsters noted broodmare Angelica, by Galopin St. Angela. This fact will be of particular interest to American horsemen, as three of her sons are now in this country. Two Arkle and Shapfell were only imported last week by J. B. Haggin, the same owner who already had the other son, Order, at the head of the Elmen-dorf stud." The morning after the Foul Shot filly, Giga, made her debut at Oakland the San Francisco Chronicle said: "Three Musket stallions have been imported from New Zealand to America. Dp to yesterday only sons and daughters of Maxim have faced the starter. He gave to the American turf Fleur de Lis, Axiom, Napamax, Altamax, Indio, Rowena B. and other first-class performers, consequently more than ordinary interest attached to the performance of Giga, a bay filly in J. Naglee Burks stable, as she was the first of the get of Foul Shot to start in this country. She was unfortunate in getting off badly, but the way she ran over he field in the stretch shows that she possesses gameness and should soon scoro a winning bracket. As Barney Schreiber owns Foul Shot, he had a big bet down on Giga all threo ways and was pleased with her satisfactory performance." Captain C. A. Tilles returned from Little Bock a few days ago.
