NOTES OF THE TURF. It is believed that the noted stallion Hanover will bo unfit for stud duty this year. Two months ago Hanover came near dying of colic. Since then he has been slow to recover, and at present is quite thin and weak. Colonel Young, the proprietor of McGrathiana, it is stated, has fully determined to allow the great horse le rest this year. Tom Loates, the famous English jockey, has been traveling this winter. Recently he visited Malta, and while there hired a native pony as a means of locomotion. The youth who was in charge delivered a stirring address before he woald let Loates mount as to the proper seat in the saddle and the way to hold the reins. Two of the A. H. and D. H. Morris fillies in training at Memphis have been shipped to New Orleans to be started for the Lightning Stakes, five furlongs, tomorrow, Dr. Riddle and Alex are among the others likely to start. The Morris fillies are reported to have outworked all the two-year-olds at Memphis. J. J. McCafferty has sold his three-year-old Ned Wickes for 00 to John Vance. Mr. McCafferty has decided to materially reduce his stable before returning east and will offer for sale Sheik, Kenmore Queen, Peat, The Winner, Effie Ainslie and Lilian Bell. R. W. Walden and Sons have sold to J. C. Cahn the 2-year-old filly Silver Fizz, by Silver Fox Tonique; price, ,500. Silver Fizs last week worked four furlongs at Montgomery Park in 49i. Sunday the Morris colt Kentucky Colonel worked a mile over the Memphis track in 1:46. Outside of Jolly Rogers mile in 1:45 this is the best workout so far reported from Memphis. Goodwin Bros.
