THE KENTUCKY DERM. The twenty-fifth Kentucky Derby will be decided at Louisville this afternoon. A few days ago it appeared probable that there would be at least eight starters, but Mannel and Corsini have scared timid owners into withdrawals, so that the anticipated field has been materially reduced. However, the colts named to start, are the conceded pick of the eligibles, so a slashing, good race may be reasonably anticipated and paucity of numbers will be lost sight of in consideration of the quality of the contestants. The history of the Kentucky Derby is replete with legends that invest it with interest equal to that attaching to any other stake event annually contested in this country. In its list of winners appear such noble names as Aristides, Fonso, Hindoo, Leonatus, Spokane, Riley, Halma, Ben Brush and Plaudit, while such great horses as Ten Broeck, King Alfonso, Parole, Himyar, Bersan, Proctor Knott, Blue Wing. Huron, Boundless, Ornament and Lieber Karl are in the list of those who tried in vain for its honors. At the time of its institution racing was at a very low ebb in the west and the interest the Derby evoked went a great way toward reviving and popularizing the sport.
