GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Morris Park is a very livel place at present and many are the horses that are being asked questions on its broad tracks. A dispatch says of the work done there Tuesday : One of the first moves of the morning, and by far the most conspicuous from a speed point ■ of view, came from John Bodens speedy racer. • Don dOr, who clipped off a mile, going in his * old-time airy fashion in 1 :414. This son of Rayon - dOro has the speed of the wind in his trials 8 and trainers say that if he could keep up his s work he would gather up the handicaps by the 9 armfuls. He went the trip without a falter. "Trainer Jimmy Rowe sent the Keene famous 3 racer, St. Cloud, a mile and a quarter trip in i 2 :25. Spencer had the mount and the American-bred - racer that many good judges thought finished - first in the Cambridgeshire Handicap in a England three years ago went at his work as if f he liked it. He is a thoroughbred of the largest t size, with wonderful propelling force, and when a he is let down in earnest it will probably take a a real clinker to beat him. The Huguenot turned i a mile at three-part speed and looks well. A couple of Rowes youngsters ran the last half f of the Withers mile in 50. The Domino and d other two-year-olds of the string are a hand I- , , 1 . ■ • * - 8 s 9 3 i - - a if f t a a a i A f d I- some looking lot and were sent to routine work. "T. J. Healy gave Athanas and Bangor a mile in 1 :49i. Athanas broke several lengths in front and retained his advantage to the end. The hurdler, Challenger and a stable mate, did a mile trip in 1:52. Healy gave his other charges an easy day of it. "Jack Joy ner indulged Ethelbert and Autumn in a mile gallop at three parts speed. A set of ; six youngsters were put to some schooling work 1 by starter Fitzgerald, who had his starting : machine placed on the chute of the Withers j mile. Trainer Brossman showed Imp around I the track at a cantering gait. "R. W. Walden, from Maryland, is on the ground with a large string. Filigrane and a big string of two and three-year-olda were trotted and cantered, and look fit enough to go to the races at a moments notice. "Eugene Leighs extensive lot were put through routine work by trainer Frank Kelly pending Leighs arrival to-day. J. W. Rogers showed the great Tillo over the ground at a good canter and breezed him a half at three parts speed. Matt Allens lot did nothing fast. "Among the new arrivals which are to attract the crowds and make the meeting one of the most interesting in its history are the W. C. Whitney lot, thirty-one srtong; John Daly, from the Holmdel Farm, New Jersey, with fifteen; W. P. Burch, eighteen strong; Marcus Daly, with a set of seventeen; D. S. Quinton of Newton, N. J., having nine; Simms of Kentucky, with ten, iucluding the three-year-old The Kentuckian, and Ivan Fox from Philadel-i phia, having six. The stand and clubhouse have been thoroughly renovated.". The St. Louis Republic of yesterday says: "Fifteen carloads of the best horses that were campaigned at the recent Memphis meeting arrived at the Fair Grounds yesterday. Another batch, including the stables of John W. Schorr, Will Darden and Tom Ryan, are due today. Tuesdays arrivals included the stiings of Bar-1 ney Schreiber, Abe and Lew Cahn and James Arthur. The Cahns have a grand lot of stake horses. Abes bunch includes Buckvidere, Verify, Sir Gatian, May dOr, Darington, Linda and the speedy two-year-olds, Southern Lady and Bit of Fashion, while Lews string includes Crocket, Fausturo, Sorrow, Belle Ward and the fast two-year-old Silver Fizz. Crocket is a prominent candidate for the St. Louis Inaugural. She captured the Peabody Hotel Handicap at Memphis last Saturday and is in the pink of condition. Jockey Tommy Murphy will probably pilot her in the Inaugural. Abe Cahn has two candidates in Buckvidere and Verify. The latter is one of the most improved horses on the western circuit. It took the best they had to beat him at Memphis. Both Crocket and Verify earned five pound penalties in the Inaugural by winning stakes at Memphis. Verify captured the Tennessee . stakes, while Crocket won the Peabody handicap. Crockets weight in the Inaugural is 116, including the five pound penalty, while 1 Verify carries 103, including his five-pound pen- alty. Southern Girl, the two-year-old star of ! Abe Cahns stable, is a handsome brown filly by Free Knight— Sarah Davis, bred at the Prather . farm, Maryville, Mo. Lady Contrary beat her . a length in the Gayoso stakes at Memphis, half I mile in 49i. Southern Girl will probably make , her St. Louis debut in the Debutante stakes, • Lew Cahns two-year-old star, Silver Fizz, is a 1 Morris-bred chestnut filly by Silver Fox— Tonique. She cost Mr. Cahn ,500 and showed I to be a superior filly at Montgomery Park.
