GOSSIP OF THE TURF. The program book for the fifteen days racing at Lakeside has been issued by secretary Nathanson. It makes a uniform provision of five 00 purses for each day, but a sixth will no doubt be provided from "split" races. Rapid progress is being made in putting the track in order and everything will be spick and soan when the gates are opened to the public next Thursday. Yesterdays St. Louis Republic says: "The arrivals at the Fair Grounds yesterday included a batch of good horses from San Francisco. Barney Schreibers trio of crack three-year-olds, Miss Marion, Jinks and Jerry Hunt, were accompanied by two broodmares that are to be sent to Woodlands. The broodmares are Colonial Dame, a four-year-old by Faverdale— Stately, and Ravelette, another four-year-old by Flambeau— Shannon Rose. Shannon Rose, the dam of Ravelette, is out of the celebrated California producing mare Fairy Rose, which also threw Racine, Fairy, Rosormonde and Rose-beau. The latter belonged to Mr. Schreiber and was killed in a railway accident while being shipped to St. Louis from the coast last month. Schreiber bought Ravelette because she is bred like the dead Rosebeau. Colonial Dame was bred at Brookdale stud, where they have some of the finest producing mares in America. A division of Hugh L. Jones stable also arrived from California in charge of the veteran horseman, Charlie Sanders. Thei.useful three-year-old, Headwater, Promptoand Lucky Dog, are among the horses in Jones string. Q Eddie Carey is expected along in a few weeks with another division of Jones stable. T. H. Boyle, a newcomer in these parts, arrived from the coast with the useful handicap horse, Moringa, and Artilleryman, a two-year-old ■ bay colt by Artillery— Clara L. Artilleryman • is a half-brother to the crack three-year-old . Obsidian, in Burns and Waterhouses stable. • Mr. Boyle owns Clara L., and sold Obsidian to Burns and. Waterhouse. Artilleryman is probably . the biggest two-year-old at the racetrack. He ■ stands 16.1 and is built in proportion. The colt t is extensively engaged in stakes.
