THE CLOSE AT LAKESIDE. Lakeside finished its fifteen days meeting yesterday and aided by a good program and perfect weather it drew a crowd of about 3,000. The fields were exceptionally well balanced aud during the entire afternoon there was but one odds-on choice aud that was a false one. For Bume unknown reason the ricg made Abe Furst a 4 to 5 chance in tbe third race over that phenomenally fast sprinter, Hobart. Tbe latter on paper looked a "natural," and, getting away in front, he tiptoed his field, winning in the easiest kind of a way by three lengths. The 1 race was a smart one from a time standpoint. , Hobart stepped the first eighth in 111 seconds, the quarter in 23*, the half in 4»i and was pulling up at the end of the five furlongs in 1 :001. Abe Furst finished where he belonged, second. The nine furlongs handicap was the principal I CONTINUED ON SECOND PAGB. THE CLOSE AT LAKESIDE. Continued from 1st Page. event on the card. There were only five starters, but it furnished perhaps the best betting race of the meeting. Al Fresco, Myth and Old Saugns were all heavily plajed, and Banquo II. and Plantain also had a following. The race was a pleasing one to look at. Old Saugus and Myth raced like a team all down the back stretch, and were head and head when they straightened away for home. During the entire journey Nutt placed Al Fresco nicely and never made a move on the Licalzi horse until the last turn was made. He then drew his whip, but only had to apply it twice, and quicker then a wink Al Fresco responded. He got to his horses at the eighth post, and from there to the wire took things easily. Out of tha first race came a close finish. Al Lone, the favorite, winning by a nose in a bard drive from Martha Fox. Old Sunburst, long overdne, and at a good price, captured the second race after a hard drive with Ramona, by a scant half length. This was a queerly run one. Both Sunburst and Ramona looked hopelessly beaten on the far turn. They made their ran together and came very strongly through the stretch. Thirteen of the cheapest skates at the track made np the field for the fifth race, and the winner turned up in Stockholm, a 3 to 1 favorite. The meeting closed with a scratch win for Goebel. Kamsiu and Sim W., the two favorites were sent away so badly by Starter Dwyer that neither had a winning chance. Arthur Xewsum has arrived at Harlem with a string of twelve horses. The racing firm of Keene and Ryan lost a valuable colt recently at Memphis. His name was Descardo being by Teuton— Thelma. An ugly cot in the leg and chest from which blood poisoning set in made the colts destruction necessary. Hailem opens Tuesday for a two weeks meeting and then the racing scene shifts to Hawthorne. The two tracks will alternate every two weeks the same as last year. On July 4th both tracks will be the scene of racing. The Hawthorne racing organization has been named the Chicago Jockey Clnb. and Capt. J. H. Rees will be presiding judge. Harry Kuhl will act as secretary.
