. | | ■ 1 1 I 1 , » THE ST. LOUIS DERBY. Next Saturday the St. Louis Derby will be run off. From present indication the race will be one worth a journey to witness. Seventy-eight three-year-olds are still eligibe but of course most of them are now nothing but blasted hopes. Concerning tho?e that have stood the test of training and racing and are expected to go to the post the Republic of Monday says: "A well-balanced field of the best colts in training on the western circuit will start in the event. Prince McCiurg, winner of the Latonia Derby, is receiving a special preparation for the St. Lonis classic. J. H. McAvoy has been preping the colt at the Louisville track, and will probably bring him over in a day or so. Prince McClarg is a brown colt by Wadsworth — Minnie Payee. His sire defeated Aloha in the first Club Members Handicap ever ran at the Fair G rounds. Prince McCiurg lan a mile and a half in the Latonia Derby, with 122 pounds on this back, in 2:364, defeating Deering, Ways and Means, Leo Planter and others. Prince McCiurg belongs to McAvoy i Applegate. His impost is 127 pounds. Brewer Schorrs candidate, W. Overton, the great bay son of Belvidere— Peninah, will probably go to the post favorite for the Derby. W. Overtons impost will be 122 pounds, and he will doubtless handle it like a real Derby horse. Vv. Overton was unquestionably the bast two-year-old in the west last sfat on. He made his three-year-old debut last week, winning a purse Tuesday, and placing the Laurel Handicap to the credit of hiB owner on Saturday, W. Overton is thought to be the best three-year-old in traiaing on the western circuit. His performance in the Dei by will demonstrate whether or not the colt is worthy to cope with the eastern three-yea r-c Id cracks. Hops Laudeaians Cambrian, a chestnut colt by Hindoo — Cambria, is liable to cat a figure in the Derby. Cambrian captured the Himyar Stake? at Latonia last week, defeating The Kentnckian at a milo aud an eighth in 1:534. both colts packing 115 pounds. Cambrians Derby impost is 125. The Kentuckiaa is also a probable starter in the Derby, his im- post b3ing 122. The Kentackian is a chestnut colt by Pirate of Penzance— Lizzie Montrose. and belongs to E. F. Simms. His best race this year was his second to Cambrian in the Himyar. The Barrister, a chestnut colt by Terra Cotta — Alarming, in Charles Boschmeyers stable, is another probable starter. This colt was about the best two-year-old shown at Cincinnati last season, but he has shown noth- ing as a three-year-old. Charles Patterson had the colt at Memphis this spring and started him once, on which occasion lie ran third to Hi-bart and The Kentuckian at six furlongs. "The Barristers weight is 122. Will Dardens Leo Planter is thought to be a sure starter. His impost will be 119 pounds. Leo Planter is a hay colt by Leonatus— The Plantress. He won the Liohrman Hotel Stakes at one mile in 1 :44 with 122 pounds up at Memphis this spring, defeating Sea Lion. The Kentuckian, Chancery, Kentucky Colonei and Donald Bain. Of the light weights, Jim Murphys Streamer is the most fancied. This colt gets in the stake at 102 pounds, and he ought to go well. Streamer is a bay colt by Top Gallant— Kitty innn. Asa three-year-old he has started twice and scored CONTINUED Oil SKCOND PAOB, 1 ! , I I . , 1 - , t 3 t t 1 . 1 . 5 3 i , e _ 2 I * i THE 8T. LOUIS DERBY. Deenng ian several creditable races at Lainnia and is thought to be a fair sort of a colt. Donald Bain, a chestnut colt, by Strathmore— Gladness, in W. M. Hayes string, is a probable starter. Donald Bain and Deering are both scheduled to carry 102 pounds. Colocel W. L. Simmons Ben Bramble, a bay colt, by Bramble— Ill-Wind, and J. M. For-Bythes Fontainebleu, another bay by Oddfellow—Sister to Pendleton, may also start, although neither has shown Derby form in their public performances. Benson and Watts Hobart, a chestnut colt by Wawekus— Misa Yates, is a possible starter. This colts impost will be 115 pounds. Hobart has a rare turn of speedand is a horse of considerable class. If his owners start him he ought to cut some figure in the contest."
