WESTERN T WO-TEAR-OLDS. Ovor at St. Louis they entertain an opinion that the two-year-olds at the Fair Grounds are easily the pick of tho western division. This is the way the St. Louis Republic outlines the situation: "The best two-year-olds of the Beason on tho western circuit havo bean developed at the Fair Grounds. Tho Conqueror and Sam Phillips easily hold any of the other western colts safe, while Bit of Fashion and Southern Girl can beat any of the fillies that have raced at Cincinnati, Chicago or St. Louis. The Conqueror showed to ba tin best colt in training here until Sam Phillips took his measure in the most decisive stylo in the Junior Championship. Prior to this race The Conqueror had beaten Sam Phillips stable- companion, F. W. Brodo, hands down. F. W. Brode was the bsst two-year-old at Memphis, anl when The Conqueror boat him in tho Kindergarten Stakes, the son of Sir Dixon was hailed as the champion. Tho Conqueror apparently was beaten on his merits in this racc, and, until he reverses tho verdict, Sam Phillips it entitled to recognition as the champion juvoailu of the 6oasou. Tho Conqueror suffered all spring with a cracked hoof. He has worn a bar plate in all his races at the Fair Grounds. Neither Tho Conqueror nor Sam Phillips exhibited any form over the Memphis track, while F. W. Brodo, who was a "Hindoo" at Montgomery Park, cant b?at an egg at tho Fair Grounds. "Lieutenant Gibson, winner of the Sensati n Stakes, probably was tho best two-yoar-old sliovn at Cincinnati. He ran six furlongs in 1:111 with 112 pounds on his back, defeating His Excellency handily. Southern Girl ran that fast at the Fair Grounds with 108 ponnds up. Lieutenant Gibson is the colt Baker and Gentry sold to Board of Trade Smith of Chicago for 510,000. If Lieutenant Gibson is worth that price, there is no telling what The Conqueror or Sam Phillips. would bring. Both onght to beat Lieu-tonant Gibson doing anything. Lady Contrary is aboot the only filly in the west capable of giving either Bit of Fashion or Southern Girl an argument, but at five and a half or six furlongs she ought to boat the Free Knight filly. Lady Cont ary hold Southern Girl safe in their races at .Memphis, but the Free Knight filly is a better horse here than she was at Montgomery Park, and even Lady Contrary would have had her hands full taking care of the Free Knight filly the day she stepped five eighths at the Fair Grounds in 1:011, and. won as she pleased from Sam Phillips and Alice Turner. In view of the fact that Bit of Fashion is thought to hold Southern Girl safe at six furlongs it looks as though sho ought to beat Lady Contrary it the same distance. Cheesestraw and Elizabeth Klein are two good fillies, but neither is capable of giving Bit of Fashion an argument at five and a half or six furlongs."
