DEERINGS FAST BACK. v R.C. Tuckers Sir Dixon Vassar colt Deerirg won Hawthornes mile and a quarter race jea- terday and again demonstrated that be ii one o the best three-year-olds at the track over a distance of ground. He had Boney Boy, Mock ; Wayman and three others to beat, but the ring was afraid of him and never offered b9tter than ; 9 to 10 against his chances. He caught all the , -wise play at that price, but the public stuck to Boney Boy, and his price was cut from 5 to 1 down to 6i to 1. The small field was sent away at tha first attempt with Boney Boy in front and he set out immediately to make a runaway race of it. The pace Bradleys iron horss set was terrific but he never got out of Deerings reach The first mile from flag fall to flag fall waB run in 1:391. This put Boney Boy to sleep and opposite the paddock gate Deering, coming with an easy, sweeping stride, passed Boney Boy at his leisure and won pulling up in 2:07i. Monk Wayman after being carried out on the first turn by Barton made up a lot of ground down the backstrotcb, but when the piDch came he swerved badly and almost went over the inside fence with Rutter. A steeplechase ov6r the short course created more than ordinary interest and resulted in a driving finish between Gypceiver and Chenier. The former was the lucky one to win and he had been backed down from 20 to 1 to 15 to 1. He and Chenier always had iha race to themselves, and after clearing the last fence tbey hooked up and had a battle royal for about three-sixteenths of a mile. Chenier was the first to crack, and as Gypceiver was drawing away from him OBriea reached over and hit Gypceiver a couple of whacks with his whip. There was a good lot of youngsters entered in the first race, which was at three-quarters for two-year-olde. Ten started and Princess Thyra had the call in the betting at 31 to 1. It was a very open race and almost every horse was backed. Princess Thyra and H ghland Lad went to the front early, and stepping the first half in 481 seconds stopped each other. Rounding into the stretch there was a general closing up and when straightened out Lady Elite showeo. a length in front. Below the eighth pos t, though, Lew Kraft came through with a rattle on the rail and hand ridden wonjwith a bit in reserve. Rosa Diah, a 100 to 1 chance, got away poorly but ran a good race, finishing a bang-up third Had she won Patsy King and Ed OMalley would have won heavily. Al Lone was the favorite for the second race and she won away off by herself. Nutt rode the filly and took no chances. Ho was three lengths in front when he hit the stretch but kept right on about his business and never looked around. Periwig, at the liberal odds of 10 to 1, delivered the goods like a gentleman in the fifth event, and Semper Eadem, after a fierce drive through the stretch, placed the sixth to her credit. W. H. May and Son have applied for ten stalls at Hawthorne. They are now racing in tli9 east. The afternoon was hot and sultry, the track i was fast and an enormous crowd was out.
