; i : , ; t I i WHITNEY TO RACE ABROAD. Mr. William G. Whitney has purchased at the Haggin sale in England two yearlings, the St. Simon Ornis filly for 0,000 and the Goldfinch Fleurette colt for ,250. He has also securad through Percell Gilpin several yearlings which, will be trained and raced in England. Mr. Whitney, since his advent to the American turf, has been eaeily the most prominent figure in racing matters, and has done a great deal for the sport in this country. He has been most liberal in purchasing yearlings, racehorses in training, and in the establishment of a breeding farm in Kentucky by securing some of the best brad matrons in the country. That Mr. Whitney intends to race in England is certain, and it would be strange if he did not with the splendid stable he is forming. The American contingent has made itself felt in that country in the paBt two seasons to a greater extent than ever before, or at least since some of our horses captured big events some years ago. Mr. Whitney is evidently going into the sport for all there is in it, and with his resources and the proper training facilities he may bring us another Derby winner. Mr. Whitney will, of course, continue to race here, and as evidence of the broad and liberal way he is going into the sport he has arranged to securo jockeys Odom and OLeary, in addition to Glawson, for his stable. Mr. Whitney has paid good prices for the horses he has bought, bat for the most part " they have warranted the outlay. For Jean Beraud he gave 6,000; for Plaudit, 5,000; for Meddler, to go at the head of his stud, 8,000; for Buela, ,000; for George Keene. ,500: for Killashandra, ,000; for Tillo, 0,000 for Ad-i miration, the cheapest horse he ever bought, 0,000; forDe Lacy, 2,500; for Black Venus, ,000; for High Degree, ,000; for Toluca, ,OC0. And those are but a few of the two score in training. In yearlings, in the past two years, his purchase money is in excess of 0,000. Morning Telegraph.
