1 1 1 GOSSIP OJT THE TUBS." "Buttons" Garner, the well-known jockey and owner, is getting ready to retire from the turf and settle down as a farmer. Garner owns a big farm near Jasper, Me., and his grandfather has just died, leaving the ex-jockey an estate valued at 1,000. Garner has gone to Jasper to settle the matter. Before he left St. Louis he instructed Elmer Slaughter to sell all his horses. In accordance with the instructions he received from Garner, Slaughter has sold two of the best performers in the stable, namely Eitholin to John Doyle for ,000 and Trimmer to Tom Nepper for 00. Eitholin has already won two races for his new owner. Garner also owns Buckvidere, J. E. Clines and Gustavo Cook. Garner started out to ride for Dan Honig. and later on rode for George C. Bennett, the Memphis turfman. At one time Garner was considered one of the best race riders in the west. He piloted Typhoon II. to victory in all of his best races as a three-year-old, including the Kentucky Derby and St. Louis Club Members Handicap. St. Louis Republic, Mr. Pierre Lorillard has claimed the following names for those of his American bred foals of 18S8 which are to be raced in England during the coming few seasons and which have already been entered in a number of the most prominent events: Vasto, br. c, by The Sailor Prince Vestal. Mirus, b. c, by The Sailor Prince Magnetic. Tantalus, ch. c, by The Sailor Prince Tar-bouche. Exedo, ch. c, by Sensation Equality. Hamilcar, b. c, by Sensation Hope IV. Laue, b. c, by Sensation Liza. Bevera, b. f, by The Sailor Prince Bizpah. Beta, br. f, by The Sailor Prince Sprinter. Aetna, b. f, by the Sailor Prince Alcina. Scythia, ch. f , by The Sailor Prince Saluda. Juvo, b. f, by The 8ailor Prince Joy. Alcestic II., ch. f, by The Sailor Prince Aus-triana. Alcyone, b. f, by Ssnsation Aster. Mr, Lorillard nominates Vasto, Mirns, Tantalus, Exedo, Hamilcar and Laus for the recently closed Derby of 1901, while Bevera, Seta, Aetna, Scythia and Juvo are his nominations for the 1901 Oaks. In Lady Elite Col. Wm. S, Barnes owns a filly in which he can justly take pride. Her recent performances have made it manifest that she is the best of her age and sex in Chicago. The best feature in her case is that Bhe seems to thrive on racing and distinctly improves with each appearance in public. Her success yesterday was her fifth successive victory in Chicago. Since coming here she has been the winner in six out of eight starts, This year she has started in nineteen races of which Bhe has won nine, been second in six, third in one, and has been three times unplaced. One thing that makes her success pleasing to "Colonel Bill" is that she is of his own breeding from his favorite mare, Bonita Belle. She is, like her owner, truly a good one.
