HAffTHOKKES THIRD MEEriXG. tl he Racing was resumed at Hawthorne yesterday afternoon under favorable conditions. The track was slow from recent rainfall, but it was Improving as the hours went by and, as it was, g afforded good and safe footing. This slight drawback was amply compensated for by the a deliriously cool and bracing atmosphere and B the large attendance. The racing was of a j character to bring enjoymont to turf-patroniz- j ing people and was dispatched promptly and in t ,good order, i Long shots were very much in evidence, and duricg the entire afternoon but two favorites, Algareta and Serrano, won. Albartvale, at some stages in the betting at 50 to 1, captured the first event, and Fatherland at 50 to 1, was c ifirst past the poEtin the bird. None of the finishes was close. The scratches in the different races were plentiful and the :fields as a rule small. Algarettis smart performance in the fourth , event, which was at three-quarters was by far the feature of the day. This filly, with 105 , pounds up, had Benneville, 110, and Qoebel, 104, , to contend with. The latter was carrying one pound over. The ring as well as the public have a lot of respect for this filly and consequently j she was made an odds-on favorite from the outset. During the early etages of the betting there was 4 to 5 offered against her, but 3 to 5 was about the ruling prico. Beirn ville and Qoebel were each backed by their stables. The trio .left the post togather at the first attempt end down the backstretch Banco ville was sent to the front in an effort to atop Algareta. He set -a terrific pace considering the condition of the track. The first quarter was stepped in 25 sec onds and the half in 491 seconds, then Benne. ville said "take it," and Algareta, going to the .front at her leisure, won by two lengths as she pleased. Benneville baat Goebel five lengths for the place. Nine were entered in the steeplechase and they all went. It was won by one of the recent arrivals from Canada, My Valentine. She, coupled with Tricotrin as J. Mo aghers entry, opened at 21 to 1, but receded to 6 to 1. N. Bay rode My Talentine and he displayed good judgment. He laid away with her the first half of the journey, but when he saw the pacemakers, Princess Murphy and Gypceiver faltering, he went right on to the front, and, by forcing the pace, had Jais contenders wobbling before the last fence was cleared. My Valentine had to be hand ridden at the end to stall off the strong rush -Zuf allig came with on the Hat. Boanerges made his initial appearance at this style of racing, bnt refused to jump, and was beaten off all the way. Nevertheless, Johnson took the rogue over all the fences, which was a good schooling for him. It was also Princess Murphys first appearance, and she made a good showing. On paper the last race seemed like a "moral" for Serrano and 4 to 5, which was his opening price, were tempting. There was nothing to the race, but Serrano, when Crowhurst cut him loose. Silver Tone sat the pace and led until well into the homestretch, but when Crowhurst got ready with Serrano he shot to the front like a fldsh and won running away. Serrano is a good racehorse and up to beating batter onos than he met yesterday. Albertvales win was a clever one and over it handicapper Ed OMalley made quite a cleaning up He is always on the lookout for long shota and after discovering that the track was -quite soft down the backstretch and exactly to Albertvales liking, he got on at 50 to 1 straight, 20 to 1 for the place and 8 to 1 to show. OMalley is an extraordinarily good "rooter" and when tl he g a B j j t i c , , , j the horse went to the front on the stretch turn c almost raised the roof from the stand with f his howling. Bon Jour was an 8 to 5 favorite e for the race but the best he could do was to get 1 second place and he had to be hard ridden to c get that. j That good, consistent filly Merito, giving , away chunks of weight to every thing in the second race including Avenstoke, won and won , in an impressive manner. The talent did not , fancy Merito and her price drifted from 2i to 1 , to 4 to 1, but at post time she was backed down , to 3 to 1. Avenstoke was made favorite at odds on but under a bad ride he ran a bad race and , did not finish in the first three. Merito, despite -her heavy impost, was always near the front , and galloping over Erla dOr on call in the stretch, she won as she pleased. The mile and a half race was marked by occurrences that produced a false result. Arlington forced the pace and was raced in front until he had enough and retired. Teutons got a bad ride and Mayme M M .was badly interfered with od the far turn. Fatherland was the only one that had a smooth journey and he plodded along at about the same gait all way and eventually won easily. Mayme M. M. was the best horse, and but for the interference on the far turn she would have walkod in.
