GOSSIP OIT THIS TURF. "That old blind mare has an interesting history," declared G. W. Curtis, the veteran turfman, as he surveyed Agnes, by Gilroy, in her paddock at Barney Eohrei-bers Woodlands farm the other day. "She has been one of the most successful producing mares in this country. Jacobin, Macbeth II. and Robespierre are the best known of her foals, but she has thrown a number of other winners. I was at Lexington tho day Hankins and. Johnson bought Rubespierre as a yearling. Mr. Johnson told me that they had paid ,C00 for the youngster. Rufus Lyle owned Agnes at the time, and Mr. Johnson told mo that the mares produce had netted Lyle 38,000. Just think of it one mares produce soiling for that sum, and the bast part of it is the fact that Lyle took Agnes for a debt of 5. That baats the lottery, dont it? When he secured the mare Lyle sent her to Harpers farm in Kentucky to be bred to Ten Broeck or Longfellow, but Mr. Harpar didnt like her looks and refused to allow her to be bred to either stallion. Mr. Lyle was a good friend of his, however, aud, to square himself with the latter, he gave Agnes a complimentary stud service to Jils Johnson, who was playing second fiddle to the two crack stallions. The produce of the union between JilB Johnson and Agnes was none other than the famous Jacobin, one of the gieatost racehorses of his day. Aftar she had thrown Jacobin Mr. Lyle had no further trouble getting his mare bred to the bast stallions Btauding iu Kentucky. Agnes sire, G ilroy, also gut the famous Gnustead, the most successful stallion that ever stood in California. Grin-stead was owned by Lucky Baldwin, who brought the horse from Kentucky and established him in tho stna near Li s Angeles, where he fcirea Volante, Silver Cloud, Solid Silver, Winona, Sinaloa II., Santiago and other thor-ooghbrdd celebrities tntt made Baldwins colors famous ou every racetrack in the United j States." 3t.
