GOSSIP OF THE TURF. A Lesington dispatch to the Cincinnati Com-mercial-Tribuno yeBtorday says : "It is roported here tonight that Hon. W C. Whitney and Mr. James R. Kecne are toon to break up their breeding studs in Kentucky. Both ex secretary Whitney and Mr. Keene loase farmB in this county, the former at the preeent timo having his horses at La Belle Stud and the latter at Castleton Farm. Mr. Whitneys Btud has just been completed and is now in a fair way to become a factor in the breeding indnstry. His list of brookmares at first numbered but forty, but now he has there Borne peventy-flve mares, the pick of the conntry, a largo number of them having been added this season by purchase through Shelby T. Harbison, Mr. Whitneys Kentucky representative. In tho stud he had Meddlor, Lissak and Plaudit. No reasons are assigned for discontinuing breeding in Kentucky other than it is so far from Mr. Whitneys other business interests that it is impossible for him to lcok after his horses and enjoy discussing their blood lines with friends in their paddocks. It is stated that Mr. Whitney has leased Stony Ford property and will remove his entire stud to that place. Mr. Keene has never been thoroughly satisfied with Castleton. although there is not a farm in Kentucky of a more magnificent appearance. He has in the stud tome 2C0 brood mares and nearly a drztn stallions, including tho great Kingston, Tournament, St. Leonards, Chorister, Horoscope and St. Saviour. It is stated he has about completed negotiations for the Withers farm, owned by the Thompsons, at Red Bank, N. J, This is one of tho bast improved farms in New Jersey, and is within easy reach of New York, where the business interests of the Keenes are. If Kentucky Ioeos these two establishments the thoroughbred breeding industry will have received a severe blow." P. Tomlinson will not attempt to train his great two-year-old, The Conqueror. The colt had to be thrown out of training after his race in the Junior Championship Stakes at the Fair Grounds on account of1 a cracked hoof. This trouble has now entirely disappeared, but on account of the lateness of the season Tom-linEon has concluded to turn the colt out at Memphis and give him a chance to develop into a big threo-year-old. The Conqueror is a brown colt by Sir Dixon Repeat, dam of Kensington, Tomlinson has a band of promising ysarlings in his barn at tho Fair Grounds One of them, a filly by Sir Dixon, is said to be the fastest yearling shown at the track this fall. 3t.
