HAWTHOKNKS GOOD OPENING. Monday was the beginning of the end of racing at Hawthorne for the season of 1899. The handsome Cicero course will rnn for two weeks and then close its gates until next spring. Hawthorne has been most lucky in having excelUnt racing weather and yesterday was no exception. The afternoon waB warm and bright, and the track, wbile not at its best, woald have been faBt but for the lumps. Some -good time wrs made in the races. Capt. J. W. Rees was ab?ont from the judgps 3 1 find and the racing was taken care of hy Harry Kuhl snd Mr. W. B. Letcher. Dick Dwyer, as UBDal, wielded the flag. The card offered was an exceptionally well "balanced one and eprinklings of clae3 could b3 found in every corner of it. The steeplechase over the ehort course and a condition race at three-quarters were tho principal feature?, and both furnished stirring contests. The Chicago race-going public seems to be fond of the jumping game, and when the field -went to the post for the steeplechase the upper part of the grandstand, which affords a most excellent view, was crowded to ite limit. The lot was well bnnched as it got away. Cheesemite took the load early and was the pacemrker throughout, but she could not stand the pre3ura at the end, and eventually finished second to Globe II. The latter was a heavily played favorite. OBrien handled him skilfully. Globa II. is a beginner at tht game. OBrien nursed him cleverly tho entire route and never made a move until the last feuce was topped. Then he sent him along like a flash. -Globs II. outran the others and won with something in reserve. Out of the six furlongs condition race came a Tattling good finish. Georgie won, but only by a noso and after a terrific drive all through the final furlong. The entire bunch seemed to break well, bat Hindoonet propped and Lord Fairfax wheeled and both were left. News-gatherer wbs the horse that Georgie nosed out and had he been ridden by a stronger jockey, the result would undoubtedly have been different. Master Dugan did the best he could, but Newegatherer is a heavy-headed, loafing hore and the boy could not help him much when the pinch came. Georgie is a speedy filly and everythipg considered, her price was false. Jackanapes and Tappau fought it out for the Dine fariong rsce and Jackanapes, principally through Burns superior jockoyship over Boss, won by a narrow margin. Plantain, the fav erito, was overweighted and finished a distant fourth. P. Tomlinson and Cb.s good horse Cherry Loaf was sadly beaten by a fair lot in the last race Cherry Leaf was a natural 4 to 5 chance and the public bat havily on him. He got off good -enough to win but Yititoe did not seem to be in any hurry to get home and the horse on his own courage finished fourth. Beuut-villo won the raco by a head in a hard drive from Catastro phe. On the winner M. Wobar roae a very bad" xace. The first race was an eay thing for Mr, Johnson. He was ridden by J. Winkfleld, and was backed from 4 to 1 down to 2i to 1. Mr. Johnson was cloee to the rail all the way, and when the natural spread of tbo field came at the head f the stretch ho easily went to the front and beat Del Paso II. After a hard drive Alice Turner managed to win the soven furlong two-year-old race by a meokfroai Fiorizar. In this race Avenstoko peneu at 4 to 5, but recede i to 9 to 5. Ha ran Hort and quit baaly under Burns in the stretch.
