HUB P BATHER A STAYER. fThere was rather an inferior lot of horses in Harlems two and a quarter mile race Wednesday, bat nevertheless it proved a good drawing card, and also famished an interesting contest and a close finish. Hab Frather, with the midget jockey, Ted Waldo, in the saddle, won the event and the lad was given a tremendous reception when he was lifted off the horse by "Chalk Line" Jack Lyons after the race. Master Waldo weighs less than seventy-five pounds and is not yet in his teens. Jed has a .good head and as far as his strength lasted ho rated Hub Prather cleverly. The midget held his horso in third place during the first mile and a half and then he set sail for Holdup, and Tounding into the stretch for the final sprint home, Jod and Hub Prather Bhowed in front. The youngster was about exhausted, bat he had stroagth and stamina enough left to hold on and cluck to his horse, and amid storming applause won the race by about a length. The time was 4:C01, which was 41i- seconds faster than Jack Bradlry ran the distacco a couple of weeks or bo ago in the mud. Directly on top of Jed Waldos victory in the long distance race the youngster came out and with Mission, a 12 to 1 chance, won the mile for the two-year-olds. Mission waited on Mont "Eagle to the stretch and then cantered past him as though he was tied. Missions eaey win and the fact that Creation in the same race finished so far back throws a reflection on the three-quarters of a mile rece that the pair met in Tuesday. Creation won that race easily with Mission second. There waB much bumping:, crowding, fouling and interfering in the opening three-quarters scramble. There were fifteen starters of the cheap selling-plater class, and from the bead of the stretch homo the first nine interfered with one another more or lesa. Little Land, the winner and also the favorite, was to blame for a greater part of the trouble, and for an instant it seemed thai he would be disqualified, but when ! Mclntyre explained that the gelding bore in and that ho was doing the bast he could to keep him straight the judges excused the interference and let the race stand aa the horses finished Little j Land, Title, Grey John. Nettie Regent won the three-quarters dash for two-year-olds in a high-class way. Mitchell ot the filly off last, ran all around his field and then won easing up. Nettie Begent waB an equal favorite with TheBneh at 2 to 1. Tommy Burns rode the latter and it was hiB last mount here this year. He, J. W. Schorr Jr., CharleB Ellison and ex-jockey Mayberry left for San Francisco last night. The third was a disastrous race for the talent, flermoso was backed from 2 to 1 down to 8 to 5, bat after getting off flying and flattering his. backers for about three-sixteenths of a mile he bled and Bloss had to pull him up. Sister Alice at 8 to 1 won the race by a nose after a brush through the stretch with Little Jack Horner. That genial gentleman, H. Robinson, has a shifty horse in Jimp. The colt has won his last five races. He waB ridden by Mitchell in yesterdays closing nine furlong event, and after being almost thrown on the first tarn and also hampered at other points he eventually scored with the greatest of ease in 1:541, which was the best race of the day. Mr. Robinson always bets well on his horses, is always out to win and consequently Jimps victory was a popular one, W. H. Roller, the well-known horeeman, is ill at a down-town hotel. General Manager Miers of the Lakeeide Jockey Clab has arranged for five special trains for use during the racing season at the Indiana track. The trains on the Pittsburg and Ft. Wayne road will leave Chicago at 12:30, 12:50 and 1:10 p. m. The Illinois Central will have two trains to the track. AH trains will ran to the track in thirty minutes. "Bishop" Poole has purchased of F. T. Wood the 4-year-old gelding Jim Gore II., that recently won two races at Harlem. The price was 800. Mr. Poole will take the horse to New Orleans this whiter.
