GOSSIP OF THE TURF. The official announcement that Newport is to have an old-fashioned open betting ring at its coming meeting was a fruitful topic of conversation among horsemen, bookmakers and racegoers generally at Latonia, and on all sides were heard expressions of the greatest satisfaction over the radical departure that Manager Fowler and his associates have determined upon. The open ring at the meetiug, which bagins next Monday, is a sure go, and, as was officially announced in this column Sunday, any and all bookmakers who may desire to cut in can do so at the uniform fee of 00 per day. The Newport people will bo favored in their return to an open ring by existing conditions. With the close of the season at Harlem Saturday there will be no other track in the west this side of Frisco with an open ring. At Lakeside, where racing in the vicinity of Chicago is to be continued, syndicate betting will bs in vogue. After this week Newport will bo the only track in the Middle West at which independent bookmakers can hang up their .slates. Manager Fowler has had direct assurance from a number of bookmakers now at Chicago that they will come to Newport and hang up their slates. Mr. Fowler sent a representative to Chicago Friday night to canvass the situation. Yesterday he received a message from the gentleman to the effect that at least ten books will come from Chicago. In addition to that Manager Fowler yesterday received a letter from Eddie Austin, who has been booking at Chicago, apprising him that in addition to himself the following well known bookmakers will come from Chicago: Marcus Cartwright, C. Peicb, Sam Wagner, Hops Laudeman, Harry Laademan and Fred Slocum. In addition to those named Mr, Echols, an eastern bookmaker who has been in attendance at the Latonia meeting, has signified an intention to give the Newport game a trial, and it is reported that Mr. Frank Coleman, a well-known bookmaker of Memphis, who is now in the city, will also go on. Yesterday Marcus Cartwright wired Mr. Fowler an offer for the combination book privilege and the offer was accepted. In all probability Billy Coleman, of Nashville, who secured the combination book privilege at the Toronto meeting, will have charge of it for Cartwright. In the ring Mr. Cartwright will have two books. He will be on the block of one and Mr. Pescb, who has been booking for him all season, will bs on the other. Cincinnati En-auirer.
