LAKESIDES OPENING DAY. Lakeside had a fine afternoon for the opening of its fifteen days fall meeting yesterday, and with the genial weather came the big crowi Tbe going was a trifle deep but not so mnddy as it was at Harlem and consequently tbe racing was morn sharply contested. Tappans game victory over Great Bend, and tbe old-time jockey Pat Freemans ride on Deering were tbe principal featnres. Tappau .carried 100 ponnds to Great Bends 103, Beucevillds 113 and John Bakers 108 and was tbe outsider of the party at 7 to 1. Mitchpll rode the game, consistent gelding and bandied him to perfection. The boy -waited until the stretch was reached before he made a move and then slowly but sniely overhauled Great Bend, aDd in a rattling finish, in which Tappan ontgamed Great Bend, got tbe verdict by a short head. At one time Patsy Freeman was conceded to be one of tbe best jockeys in the West, but in the last few years he haB lost his hold, but judging from his ride on Deering in the third event he is once more in form. All of the old timers were glad to see him win, and when he came back to the Btand with a broad smile he was given a healthy round of applause. Deer-inghas bad a long let-up and was hardly up to a bruising race, and Freemans clever ride, as much as tbe horses ability, won the race. Aa it was Deering bareJy beat Tobe Paine by a short head. The other events were not cloBely contested. H. S. Tobacco 6 to 1, Florinel II. 3 to 1, Holdup 8 to 1, and Jim McCleevy 10 to 1 being tbe fortunate ones to win purses for their owners.
