GOSSIP OF THE TURF. "Paddy" Tomlinson counts on taking in several of the western Derbies next spring with The Conqueror and in addition has a choicely bred filly on which be sets great store. It is stated that before leaving St. Louis the filly showed the most remarkable work ever done by a yearling at that track. She worked half a mile in 49 seconds over the Mound City track, which, as is well known, is a slow one. She stepped a quarter down the stretch in 231 seconds, the best previous record for a yearling being a quarter in 24 seconns, held by the great race horse Ban Fox. After that work, which was dilated upon in the St. Louis papers, Sydney Paget, the wealthy eastern owner, offered Paddy ,000 for the filly, but that offer met tbe same fate as the one just made by Mr. Rogers for The Conqueror. The filly, which will be named Queen Dixon, has been entered in the Kentucky Oaks for 1901, and she will be entered in the other Oaks for that year, and also in all next years filly and all-sex events for two-year-olds throughout the country. Her owner is confident that she will prove to ba a sure-enough crack, and that he will eventually get much more than ,0C0 for her, provided ehe does not go amiss. The Sheepshead Bay track would seem to be popular with trainers if we are to judge from the number who have elected to winter their horses there. The list iB quite lengthy, and includes the following: E. HugbeB, W. O. Scully, E. F. Simms.Ed He finer, John Odom, B. V. B. Dick Newton, George Jennings, Frank Brown, Ed Snapper Garrison, Gus Hannen. Lew Elmore, Brownie Neale, James McCormick, Chapman, Tom Burke, M. Lynch and Tom Green. The last three are not quartered on the track, Tom Burke stabling Mr. Eastons horses at his sale paddocks, while Mike Lynch has his in the sale stables of the American Horse Exchange at the Bay. Tom Green rents the Btab-ling of the old De Long house, near the Neck road, of which the former, Mrs, Leigh, is still tenant. The horses of all of them are now turned out and nothing is gallor icg on the track save and except a few yearlings. Morning Telegraph. j
