CALIFORNIA TURF TALK. The following items from the San Francisco Ch ronicle and The Examiner of Saturday last will interest local followers of the turf: An Australian cablegram states that the Victorian Derby was won by H. Powers Merriwee, by Bill of Portland. Dewey, by Lochiel, finished second and Parthian third. Merriwee, who won by a length, also captnred the Melbourne cup, Dewey finishing third in that event The judges have refused the entries of George Baldwins Silver Tail on account of his in-and-out running. A carefal study of his performances, however, will show that every race on a heavy track has been bad. His only good one was in the slop. Daniel Hanlon, owner of Sly, was not satisfied with the way the mare ran on Friday and yesterday took her away from trainers Saunders and Carey. The Messrs. Hanlon bet 00 on Sly Friday, and B. Van Brunt had a wager of ,100 on her. Albert Simons came in Friday morning with a string of fourteen from Chicago. Among them are Flax Spinner, Latch Key and Florinel II. Simons is a partner of Tommy Griffin. Silver II., the son of Salvator, who finished third to Bequital and Crescendo in the Futurity, is in training and may soon sport silk at the local track. W. B. Larzelere haB purchased Silver Tone and Afamada from P. Byan. The consideration was not made public, but is said to be ,000. Canace, the bread-winner in Nick Halls stable, is dead. She contracted fever on the way out here and died at Sacramento. Frank McMahon has purchased the colt Croker, by Tammany, from Colonel StoteBbury at a private figure, j Take Notice will have five two-year-olds on the turf next year.
