NOTES OF THE TURF. The Star of Bethlehem, Miss Dede and the other horses in Hart Gibson Jr.s, string have bsen coughing and ailing, but are now rounding to and will soon be seen at the post. Mr. Gibson had Chambarlain in his birn when he first arrived, and, knowing what the colt could do, was preparing for a big killing with him, but his Northern owners sold him and he was turned over by Mr. Gibson to those who are at present handling him. Against his advice, they worked him differently from what he told them, and started him in the wrong spot, batting a big pile on him. When he won at 12 to 1 his party had only a small bet on him, while they might have made the coup of the meating. N. O. Picayune. "Santiago" Murphyjwho figured as a plunger on California, New Orleans and Chicago race courses, and was arrested for robbing the National Bank of Mexico of 0,000, has bsen sentenced to nine years in prison. The case attracted much attention, as Murphy fled to the United Btates after the robbery and was finally captured by Amerioan detectives. In New Orleans he escaped from the Mexican officers, but was recaptured. Mr. T. D. Hodgins of Canada died recently at his home. He was prominent among ihe Canada breeders, both of trotters and thoroughbreds, and imported Albert, the sire of Mesmerist, and other good horses In the United States. The breeding interest of Canada has lost by the death of Mr. Hodgins one of its most enthusiastic supporters. The Thoronghbred Record has bsen purchased by W. C. Scott and John Wallace, both enterprising young men of Lexington, Ky. It is their intention to increase the sise of the Becord, which will be continued as a weekly jonrnal devoted to the interests of the thoroughbreds.
