VETERANS THAT WON. Some extremely good horses, five years old and upward, graced the American turf this fear. To say nothing of the grand mare Imp, we had the long distance champion Ben Holla-day; Algol, a high-class horse that unfortunately fell lame early in the season; fleet bnt stubborn and unruly Box; Don dOro, a fine example of the qualities most, desirable in a race , horse; Carnero, David Tenny, Dr. Bheppard, Dnnois, Harry Duke, Lord Zeni. May W., Merry Prince, Maceo, Maxine, Peep oDay, Rubicon, , Bosinante, Satsuma, Buckwa, Serrano, Salv-able, Timemaker end What er Lou, all horses of more than average speed and power and in addition, the brilliant sprinters. Voter, Isidor, OConnell, Geyser, Meddler, Caesarian, Montgomery, Mizpah and Pat Morrissey. In all, 296 horses of the age specified won two or more races in 1899, a very good showing for the veterans of horsedom. Burns and Waterhouses good Belling plater Pat Morrissey enjoys the distinction of having pulled off the greatest number of races and that he has been consistent is amply attested by the fact that in his thirty-seven starts he has run unplaced but three times. Seventeen horses have scored double figures in races won, but none of them has won half of hiB starts, OConnell coming closest to that honor. The table gives all that have won five or more races, with selections from the best of those that won four races or less. It will be observed that some noted race horses show in the number that aro credited with but four victories, Ben Holladay, Geyser, Libertine, Macy, Tragedian, Peep oDay, Buckwa, Ostler Joe, Algol, What er Lou, The Elector and Thomas Cat, for instance.
