CAIMAN S FAST MILE. Continued from First Page. Lingfield summer meeting. The race in question is a penalty and allowance affair, at a mile, for three-year-olds and four-year-olds, but Caimans five opponents were all three-year-olds, viz : Vain Duchess, 122 pounds; Courlan, j 119; Mahdi, 114; Cracks, 113. and Dancing Boy. | 102. Caimans weight was 128 pounds, and with ] Lester Reiff in the saddle his betting quotation J at flagfall was 9 to 4 on. a favoritism which he | amply justified by taking the lead at the dis- ] tance and winning by two lengths from Courlan in the phenomenal time of 1 :3m1.-,. The Lingfield mile is perfectly straight and especially adapted to fast time, its ground being slightly on a decline the entire distance. As a j matter of fact, the first half mile shows an aver- ] age decline of one foot in seventy-six. while the j last half has an average fall of about one foot in ] 200. The finish is. therefore, something like 48 1 feet below the start, and is easily evident J that the course must be very fast, especially j owing to the fact that the descent is so gradual 1 all the way. presenting no obstacle to a horses extending himself. Last year, in winning this same race. Harrow created a time record of 1 :3." 4.-„ and now Caiman has eclipsed this by more than two seconds.
