, THE WESTERN TURK TODAY. It is gratifying to note the many evidences of future prosperity for the western turf. The Washington Park Club, Chicago, has recently closed one of the best meetings in the history of that track. Indeed it was so pronounced a success that the club lost no time in claiming dates for the spring meeting of next year, accompanied by the announcement that the added money to all the stakes would be largely increased. The meeting recently closed was in no way disturbed by the representatives of the law. and no attempt was made by any organization formed for the purpose of seeing that the statutes are enforced to interfere with the sport, a result due probably partially to the influence of the management of the club and to the fact that the betting was conducted on the plan that prevails in the east. All went smoothly from start to finish, the sport was first-class and the attendance was up to the high-water mark of the good old times of lcng ago. The Latonia Jockey Club, notwithstanding the "interchange of courtesies" with the Newport association, the racing beiDg conducted alternately at each track, held a most successful meeting in the spring, the first in several years. The racing was excellent, and the improvement in attendance was mi marked that visiting turfmen declared it looked like old time-; to see the seats iu the grand stand so well filled by spectator.--. Secretary Hopper and his associates are well pleased with the future out-. looks for racing in the vicinity of Cincinnati. OOHTniOTO* ON IKOND fAQM, I r : = * : 9 WESTERN TURF TODAY. Continued from First Page. and as an evidence of the fact the announcement has been made that no purse of a less value than 00 will be raced for at the spring meeting next year. Other tracks in the west have held successful meetings this season, and in consequence are en- couraged to offer more liberal programs for their meetings next spring. Some idea may be formed of the extent of the revival of turf affairs in i the west and the increasing signs for the future i prosperity of the sport when it is known that all the tracks have more than made expenses i this season. Even Cumberland Park, that has i hardly had a taste of success since it was built, gave a most successful meeting in May, and there is a promise that it will do still greater things next year. That the association considers the outlook rosy is emphasized by the fact 1 that a large lump of money has been spent this summer in improving the track and buildings ; and in the erection of new barns, paddocks and I cabins, to say nothing of repainting the grandstand, repairing roads, drives, etc. Besides i these things tree planting goes on constantly, , so that what was once a barren waste "now , blossoms as the rose."— Spirit of The Times.
