BLUES B C BY SIR DIXON BONXIE BLUE IXEISCHETANli8 DERBY COLT It is gratifying to note tbat tbe eastern owned colts and fillies engaged in tbe American Derby tbat have so far been etarted bave vitb bardly an exception shown good racing form Commando Bonnibert Blues Conroy Tbe Parader Water Color Sweet Lavender and Sadie 5 each won at thoir first attempt and it remains to be seen whether snch good ones as Beau Gallant and Far Rockaway will not fol ¬ low this excellent example exampleBines Bines is the eole reliance of the strong Fleiecbmann stable for the American Derby His career as a twoyearold was by no means remarkable yet it was such ae to win for him a placo in the list of conceded good colts of the year His first start was for the Canarsio Stakes at Aqueduct April 24 Bidden by N Turner he ran fourth to Kenilworth Fake and Ontlander Kenilworth won by a half length the other three finishing heads apart The starters were Blues 113 Eenilwortb Fake Glenwood and Tbe Golden Prince 112 each Ontlander The Regent Anecdote and Light Ball 109 each and the race was run in tho fast time for that track of 55 seconds the dis ¬ tance being 4i furlongs Blues was pocketed and much impeded in the stretch but for which he would probably have won wonHis His next essay was more fortunate This was when he started in a race for a purse at Grave send May 28 distance five furlongs He was an oddson favorite at 3 to 5 at post time and an easy winner in 102 Schoolmaster finishing second and Bean Gallant third The other starters were Dr Preston Dr Barlow The Golden Prince Humboldt Relucent San Luis Rolling Boer and The Blue Coat Blues won by a length and a half Schoolmaster finishing as far in front cf the afterward famous Beau Gallant All carried 112 pounds with sex allow ¬ ances At tbe same meeting June 1 he won another purse at five furlongs done this time in 102 defeating Delmarcb Humboldt and Vouch Blues was again an oddson favorite at 2 to 5 and an easy winner by a length and a half Delmarch finishing a similar distance in front of Humboldt Blues Delmarch and Vouch carried 115 pounds and Humboldt 107 107Blues Blues was sent for greater game June 9 when ho started in tha 12500 Great American Stakes Coupled with his stable companion Bonnibert tho pair went to tho post favorite at 3 to 1 in a field of eleven starters Tho start was a bad one and from where he got off Blues had no chance yet he ran a fine race and finished fifth Prince Charles winning with Prince Pepper second Tommy Atkins third and Alfonso fourth The starters and weights were Tommy Atkins and Bonnibert 125 each Prince Charles 122 Prince Pepper Alfonso Blues Handwork The Puritan Bellario Bedeck and Lief Prince 115 each In a desperate finish Prince Charles won by a head from Prince Pepper he another head beforelTommy Atkins Two lengths back was Alfonso a similar distance before Blues Thus the latter with at least ten lengths the worst of the start was beaten but four lengths and his race was fully as good as the winners The time was 1 02 distance five furlongs Four days later he had better luck when with Danny Maher up he won the 10000 Tremont Stakes at six furlongs in the fast time of 1 13 C The starters were Tommy Atkins 125 Blues Prince Pepper Holstein Handwork All Green iThe Puritan and Bedeck 115 each Tommyr Atkins was a 6 to 5 favorite while it was 5 to 1 at post time against Blues It was a good start and a truly run and strongly contested iace withlBlnes the winner by7 a length from Prince Pepper he a head before unlucky Toinmy Atkini This was the greatest triumph of Bines career as a twoyearold and one that any owner might justly be proud of ofAfter After this Blues ran three times without being placed the three racos being against the best of his age and with high weight up August 25 carrying 126 pounds he finished sixth in the Futurity and weight considered ran a good consistent race September 8 carrying the top weight 125 pounds he ran unplaced in the Great Eastern Handicap Beau Gallant 107 winning with Dublin 123 second arid Far Rockaway 121 third Blues was eased up by Maher when plainly beaten and finished in ninth place His last race of the year was for the Prospect Handicap at Gravesend September 29 Tho starters wore Bean Gallant 116 Water Color 115 Autolight 100 Blues 118 Dr Bar ¬ low 97 Lady Schorr 119 Dublin 114 King Lief 113 Driscoll 103 Bedeck 117 and Silver dale 117 In this field of eleven Blues was last away from tho post and finished a good fourth beaten a head for third money Beau Gallant was the winner by a length and a half with Water Color second a half length before the lightly weighted Antolight It was an excellent race done in fast time and Blues performance was highly creditable creditableFrom From this sketch it will be seen that as a rule Blues was in contention in his races last year with tho elito of his age and sustained his part right gallantly He is a speedy consistent per ¬ former and it is understood that he is to be sent here to start for the American Derby He is also engaged in tho Sheridan Stakes and Drexol Stakes so that ho will probably go to the post several times during the progress of the Washington Park meeting and will be deserving of respect in any company
