TF J DEBOES AUBUKN STAKES Despite the fact that yesterday was an off day at Washington Park the usual large attendance was on hand and witnessed a good days sport sportTbe Tbe feature event of the day the Auburn Stakes went to James Arthurs likely colt W J Deboe who carried his light impost in front all the way and stalling off Meritos determ ¬ ined rush at the end won a somewhat clever race by a neck Cambrian came fast in the last sixteenth and nipped the tiring Orimar for third place Silurian on whom there was a generous play ran a dull race going all to pieces in the last quarter quarterThe The tilt between Terminus and Eddie Jones in the first race was an exciting one the two loci ing at the bead of the stretch and fighting it cut to the wire Terminus although slightly swerving in the last eighth always had a necks advantage and held it to the end Lady Elite who is not partial to anything over threequar ¬ ters ran a good race and is duo for an early bracket when placed right rightJiminez Jiminez with Bullman in the saddle easily disposed of Operator in the fifth rcce a dash of one mile The Kelley colt bad all his old time speed and running well within himself under a clever ride won by two lengths while the Dur ¬ ham colt beat Frank Ackerman four lengths for the place Operator was cut cff eharply just beyond the club house turn but made up his ground gradually and was always within strik ¬ ing distance Many horsemen were of the opin ¬ ion that Mathews made a mistake in trying to place the colt instead of allowing him to run on his own courage as Operator is a free runner and shows to best advantage as a pacemaker pacemakerPoseart Poseart long over duo finally won a cleverly contested six furlongs dash which was the last event on the card Bullman held him nicely together and keeping him in the lead by a slight margin throughout had enough left in the colt to win by a length from Rollick who beat the fast closing Isalino a short half length for the place Toah of whom much was ex ¬ pected on the strength of hie California per ¬ formances ran a poor race and was never a factor
