A HOBSES QUEER CAKEER A threeyearold named Jim Clark has leaped j into popular favor at Newport by winning three r races straight His career has been one of sin g gnlar vicissitudes as the following from a Cin ¬ I I c cinnati newspaper will serve to show Thie shifty animal now the speed marvel of the Licking Valley track was bought by hia p present owner L V Bellow for 6750 from i Dillard Hill tho wellknown Lexington horse B man at tho Atlanta Ga meeting last fall i Hill thought he was handing Bellow a gold t brick when the sale was made and for a time j Mr Bellow was of the same opinion The latter i however was gama and did not let out a howl t but Winttalong patiently with the youngster t who vrasjthon a twoyearold and trained him E all season without securing a purse Several times Bellows was tempted to part with the f gelding for a fivedollar note but remembering the oldj saying that patience brings sure re ward ho heldton to Jim Clark and at the close of the meeting atfAtlanta Jim Clark with sev oral others was shippedlto the Bellow farm j near Owensboro Ky KyHo Ho spent the winter well and filled out j nicely during tha cold months While the other horses were living on light diet Jim Clark was eating from fifteen to seventeen quarts of oats a day and soon looked like the prize Norman at a country fair During the NashvilloimeetingiMr Bellow concluded to take his string to Nashville and on April 23 Jim i Clark was startedfor the fiist time as a three yearold To tho surprise of hia owner and others who knew Jwhat a miserable failure he was as a twoyearold Jim Clark finished a bangup second to Echo Dale in his first effort of the season Hia owner looked at the geld ings black glossy hair powerful hind quar tors and legs that appeared to bo made fora model race horse and remarked to a friend That hosswill be breaking records before the Fourth of July Shortly afterward Mr Bel low shipped his horses back to Owensboro and there they remained until a week ago whenthe made his initial bow to the local racegoers As he paraded past the grand stand the spectators eyes opened in admiration of the ft handsome thoroughbred He looked evory inch a race horse and to tho initiated his breeding was convincing proof that he would prove it Well the race was run and Jim Clark at 10 to 1 not only got out of the maiden class but displayed a remarkable burst of speed He ran eo fast that the others became dizzy anc before going half of the journey he had openec up a gap of from 8 to 10 lengths Ho came home under restraint and from that day to this no one baa ever seen Jim Clark extended He is a qnickbreaker and in all of his races he has gone right to tho front and stayed thore There is no question about Jim Clark being a speec marvel but what the horsemen want to fine out is how fast the golding really is He may be beaten later on but just now Jim Clark has done all they have asked of him as his owner puts it and is tha sensation of the meeting meetingJim Jim Clark was bred by Colonel Milton Young at the McGrathiana etud near Lexington Ky As a yearling he showed nothing and to get ric of him Colonel Young presented Jim Clark to CONTINUED ON SECOND PAGE A HORSES QUEER CAREER Continued from First Page George Hinkle the wellknown Lexington trainer who developed Gold Or which he pur ¬ chased for 25 and afterward sold for 1000 to Cnrley Brown Hinkle traded the gelding to DillardHill for a fifteen dollar buggy horse and Hill in turn sold him to Bellow for the small sum of 6750 Now Bellow wants 3500 for Jim Clark and the waerB and trainers at Hewport think he is well worth the price Such are the fortunes of the turf
