AN EASTERN VJEW VJEWEditor Editor H A Buck of the Spirit of the Times made a trip to Chicago to witness the four ¬ teenth American Derby and here is what he wrote back to his paper about it A great spectacle comparable only to the English Derby Day and far surpassing anything seen in the east was tha unanimous comment of the Eastern turfmen who were fortunate enough to be present at Washington Park Chi ¬ cago on American Derby Day Certainly the crowd was larger than is seen in any Eastern course numbering fully forty thousand and of the best quality Society in Chicago turned out en masse while countless representatives from St Louis Cincinnati Louisville Cleveland 233 a record breaking performance for th event while tha field including as it did some of the best threeyearolds of the east ana the undoubted champions of the west has never been surpassed in the history of the race Starter Dwyor who is undoubtedly close to the top in his profession sent the field of ten away to as perfect a start as I have ever witnessed after a delay of less than ten minutes and only one false break breakBefore Before the first quarter of a mile had been run His Eminence who had gotten off second was seen suddenly to drop back to a bad last and whether he was interfered with or Odom lost his nerve in the rather roughriding field the chances of the Mackay horse were settled then and there At that the performance of Mr Mackays recent purchase was thoroughly creditable as he made up a lot of ground on the back and homestretch and finally finished a good fifth When half the journey had been finished the race barring accidents was seen Detroit and other Western cities put in an ap ¬ pearance New York City sent several promi inent in society and the turf circles of the city including Mr and Mrs Clarence H Mackay Frederick Gebhard B T Wilson Jr Craig W Wadsworth F Appleton Smith Edward Crown inshield Senator P H McCarren and Frank Farrell The clubhouse and the spacious lawns in front of it were crowded with wellgowned women and wellgroomed men the grandstand and the lawn between it and the track as well as the uncovered stand were packed to suffoca ¬ tion while the infield contained numberless coaches victorias and traps of various kinds Derby Day being regarded in Chicago almost as much of a holiday as in London If Chica goans wished to impress an Easterner with their Derby Day a brighter or more favorable speci ¬ men conld not have been selected than that of 1901 1901The The weather conditions were simply perfec ¬ tion the track lightning fast aa the timaain tha various races showed tha Derby beu5 i to be between The Parader the leader Bobert Waddell and Terminus and at the mile and a sixteenth The Parader with two lengths lead and apparently running well within himself seemed to have the Derby won However when the homestretch was reached Robert Waddell the rank outsider caught and passed him and in the last hundred yards Terminus as well as The Parader tiring badly though showing no tendency to run out at the turn under Piggotta strong guidance guidanceBobert Bobert Waddell whose victory was a popu ¬ lar one won handily by a length and a half Terminus a length in front of The Parader who was four lengths in front of Bonnibert and six ahead of His Eminence They finished aa named Bullman on the winner rode an ex ¬ ceedingly well judged race and scored his sec ¬ ond American Derby win Though Spencer rode Bean Gallant and Turner Bonnibert for all that waa in them neither were contenders at NTIOTED ON SECOND PAQH AN EASTERN VIEW Continued from First Page any time Bean Gallant in particular never showing a particle of spood from start to finish finishAs As to the lesson of the Derby thirteen oat of fourteen American Derbies won by Western horses and yet the socalled wise men of the east do not as yet recognize the error of their ways said one of the best trainers of the west immediately after the running of the Dorby Continuing ho added No Eastern horse barr ¬ ing perhaps one of the Salvator Morello or Commando class can win this one and a half mile event unless at his best after at least a conplo of weeks recuperation from the thous ¬ andmile journey here and an opportunity to acclimatize himself himselfThe The Eastern contingent present this year owners trainers and jockeys alike have arrived at the same conclusion and a most rational and sensible one it seems especially after one has personally taken the journey hot and trying even under the best of conditions at this season of the year It can easily be imagined how severe a strain the trip must bo upon the physi ¬ cal condition and nervous system of a high strung thoroughbred as a rule just on edge when the journey is taken Bonnibort and Bean Gallant had only two or three days in which to recuperate from the effects of their journey and both were given severe trials on Thursday The Parader had his trial a severe test as the time 2 33 over the Sheepshead Bay course shows on Wednesday and had but one night in which to recuperate after his arrival in Chicago To my mind the more statement of these facts should be sufficient to convince any fairminded person as to the groat handicap under which Eastern horses labor in arriving so short a time before a gruelling contest such as the American Derby is apt to be beUnquestionably Unquestionably there have been in the past years when the Eastern representatives greatly outclassed the Western notably in the cases of St Leonards and Domino as after events proved conclusively but then as now too short a period was given for recnptration It may yet bo proved that wo in the east have overrated The Parader and Bonnibert but that Robert Wad dell and Terminus are their superiors even at the different weights previous performances both in the East and West seem to disprove disproveTaking Taking the race as a whole it must be con ¬ sidered the best American Darby ever run as the class of several of the contestants was above the average the time record breaking and the race truly run from start to finish While Rob ¬ ert Waddell won handily at the end the result was always in doubt as between him and The Parader until the last quarter and the interest was sustained throughout
