ABE FRANK DEFEATED DEFEATEDThe The colors of the heretofore invincible Abe Frank went down in defeat for the first time since the horse came to Chicago barring his famous runaway yesterday at Washington Park Sir Oliver Clay Bros likely colt was the youngster to do the trick and he did it in a most impressive fashion The defeat came in the rich Hyde Park Stakes six of tbo best two yearolds in the west responding to the bugle call The track was slow and may in a degree have militated against the chances of the Ben ¬ nett wonder wonderTo To a good start Memnon shot to the front and opened a gap of nearly two lengths from Charles W Meyer on whom Penticost was lapped Abe Frank laid along in fourth place in a good po ¬ sition but appeared to lack that dash of speed that had so often carried him to the front in his many races hereabouts Memnon going along at a great clip still continued in the lead nearing the stretch turn a length before Charles W Meyer with Pentecost and Abe Frank mov ¬ ing up When straightened for home the Dunne colt increased bis lead to three lengths while Abo Frank Charles W Meyer and Pentecost were necks apart in the order named about two lengths before Sir Oliver It appeared all over like Memnon in the last eighth for although Abe Frank and Pentecost were cloeingiporcopti bly it was evident they could not get up in time Along in hero Sir Oliver came with a great burst of speed and quicker than it can be told he had reached all but tbo leader Winkfield tried to rally his mount in the closing strides but to no avail as Sir Oliver passed him easily winning by a length with Memnon just lasting long enough to boat Abe Frank a neck for second place Pentecost tired badly in the last sixteenth while Charles W Meyer had enough of it by the time the head of the stretch had been reached reachedBelles Belles Commoner took the days opener in rather a handy fashion from Hans Wagner with Emathion who made his initial bow to racing an indifferent third j jThere There was nobody to carry Money Muss fast in the second race a six furlongs dash so the Woods gelding had everything his own way and was never in trouble leading from start to fin ¬ ish and winning easily by a length with Like ¬ ness second a length and a half before Boney Boy Both Boney Boy and Fleuron ran well up to the final quarter but fell completely out of the race thereafter thereafterThe The fourth race went to Alaska wbowas skil ¬ fully ridden by Winkfiold He held the gelding back of bis field until tho final straightaway where he called upon him and he ate up his field with ease winning well in band by a length from El Gbor who came fast in the last six ¬ teenth and nipped the tiring Evelyn Byrd by a neck on the post for second place placeScotch Scotch Plaid carried off the fifth race in handy manner while Joe Collins long overdue beat the swerving Enightbanneret in the last The latter veered almost into the inside rail in the last hundred yards when he seemed all over the winner winnerA A number of Wheeler Handicap candidates candidateswere were given brisk work after the conclusion of ofracing racing y sterday Old Pink Coat did bis mile and a quarter in 214 finishing fresh and good goodwithout without bleeding and can be set down as a sure surestarter starter The Conqueror II was sent a mile and a quarter in 2154 and Martimas the same dis tance in 217 The trainer of Terminus was wassatisfied satisfied with a mile and a furlong tryont which the minutesflat Young Handicap winner did in two minutes flat ta The cardtfor this afternoon is made tip of purses onlylbnt they are all well filled and the taciDgIwillbe fully up to Washington Parks A standard
