GOSSIP OF THE TUKF As was predicted before the opening of the Sbeepshoad spring meeting many records have been broken on the Coney Island Jockey Club track During the winter superintendent Frank Clarke practically ramade the track plough ¬ ing it redressing it banking the lower club house turn and improving it in every way pos ¬ sible The result of this was that many records were splintered and a new basis of time calcu ¬ lation for the track rendered necessary No less than nine new track records wore made and equaled while the record of Brigadier 137J for a mile on a circular course is a worlds record The weather has been very favorable the dry clear air having a great effect on the average horse but still more de pends upon the track Some horsemen criticize the modern fast tracks believing them to be too hard and too tbinly dressed on the top but many others like the faster times made and a great number of the racing public are also keeping close tab However there are styles in tracks as in other things and today is the day of the skinned track in the east Spirit of the Times The American jockeys have been cutting a wide swath in Austria this year The appended table is up to June 20 and shows that Taral Morgan Gray Jones Ross Doggett and Ham ¬ ilton have all had their share of success Tarals share being somewhat the greatest however JockeysFred Jockeys Rces 1st 2d Fred Taral 104 RAdams 133 T H Morgan 68 R Cleminsou 91 GrayEddie Charles R Gray 65 Eddie Jones 78 Eddie Ross 61 H Barker 58 H Vvileon 90 T Gilchrist 40 F B Block 73 8 Dotfgett 40 R Huxtable 63 A Hamilton 41 Charles Imre 12 H Fonthey 91 FSlack 88 5 12 Charles Prndames 51 5 5 On Saturday Charles Dwyer returned from England and reports a very successful season and that tho American jockeys were doing first class He said sold all my horses before leaving England I had my eye on two that I intended to buy and bring back with me but Eugene Leigh got ahead of me and purchased them Mr Whitneys Derby winner Volody ovski is a grand race horse He ran the Derby distance in 240 while Cap and Bells Mr Keonos filly with practically the same weight and under similar weather conditions took a little more than four seconds longer This will give some idea of tho quality of Mr Whitneys horse Mr Dwyer will not return to England this season To the owners who intend to make entries to English events notice is given that several im ¬ portant English races will close on July 23 They are the July and Chesterfield stakes Hastings and Tetland stakes and also sub ¬ scriptions for Stallion and Stud stakes all to be run at Newmarket At Epsom tho Derby and Oaks have their closing at Ascot the Corona tion and St James Palace stakes and at Good ¬ wood the Craven Richmond and Sussex stakes On July 30 tho entries will close for the 50000 Eclipse Stakes which has its running at San down Park The innovation of book making which is bo ing tried at Butte is thus referred to by the InterMountain Syndicate booking does not meet with the approval of the betting fratern CONimtJED ON SECOND PAGE GOSSIP OF THE TURF Continued from First Page ity There is absolutely no competition and the talent is forced to take the odds posted on one book or do without as the other books will offer nothing better In fairness to the patrons of any race track the management should throw the betting ring open and give its patrons at least a run for its money A graball game will certainly not make racing popular popularIt It looks as if the colors of the well known firm of B Banford Sons will not be seen this year as they have leased their horses to W H Sealey which includes the following Chnctanunda 3 Chughnawaga 2 Donro 4 Perty Center 2 Rock Cliff 2 Rockstorm 3 Rockton 4 Rock water 2 Scholaric 2 Scotch Bush S Thrilled 3 and Tribes Hill 2 New York racegoers will not receive a chance to see their great favorite Imp run a race until after the Saratoga meeting is over for she will be shipped probably Tuesday or Wednesday for the Spa She is in the best of condition and it is expected that she will show her heels to many of the fast ones when she starts
