ABE FRANKS COMPETITION COMPETITIONThe The going at Hawthorne yesterday was pasty and holding giving mudlarks a chance to ex ¬ tend themselves Despite the bad condition of the track the usual large crowd was present and witnessed a good days sport The feature event of the day was the Competition Stakes a dash of five and a half furlongs for twoyear olds 1500 added addedOf Of the six carded to start South Elkhorn was the only absentee The stake was taken in a big exercise gallop by that grand youngster Abe Frank who shook off his stable companion Herodiade soon after the first half bad been run and then simply cantered the rest of the way winning by three lengths from Doreen who finished resolutely beating Commissioner For ster one for second place The lastnamad ran quite a good race finishing stoutly Herodiade tired and quit after showing a rare turn of speed for a half mile Ariau conld not get up a common gallop in the mud and ran a poor race considering his light impost The winner fell into an easy berth as there was nothing that finished back of him to make him extend himself The steeplechase went to a newcomer Crest who mcde her initial bow in tha crosscountry game She assumed an easy command from the very flag dip and fencing cleanly simply ran away from her field which consisted of one horse Flaccns at the finish She won by twenty lengths The jockey on Flaccns lost his left foot out of the stirrup after taking the ninth jump and while trying to replace it lost considerable ground but it made hardly any difference in the result Miss Ransom fell over the last jump but was afterward caught and ridden out by a stable hand for third money Filon dOr outrun from the start refused the seventh jump and did not finish finishThe The opening event of the day went to that good mndder Mureeca Getting off in front she opened a big gap when going down the back stretch and maintained it up to the last eighth where she begin to tire and just lasted long enough to beat the fast coming Harry Wilson a neck on the post Santa Teresa was easily second up to the last sixteenth where the hot pace that been set by the leaders began to tell and she began fading She was only beaten however by the Schorr youngster a half length for second place J V Kirby supposed to be a good thing in the race could not extend him ¬ self in the going finishing a far away fifth There was little or no action back of the first three threeSegurancas Segurancas victory in the second race was the sensation of the day as no easier win has been witnessed hereabouts this year She fairly spreadeagled her field from the barriers rise and won pulled up almost to a walk by ten lengths Pupil who ran second was slightly outrun in the early stages of the race but fin ¬ ished going well beating Josephine B a hal length for second place The latter ran a gooc race considering that she rnna best over a die tance of ground Peace who has always shown well over a muddy track was speedy for about a half mile and then fell out of contention contentionHenry Henry of Trastamare who has shown to good advantage in bis last two races had little trouble in annexing the purse of the fifth race to his credit He was held at odds on and ran like the figures indicated he should He suf ¬ fered Educate to run in the liad to the fina eighth where Robertson called upon him and he went to the front in a bound winning hands down by four lengths while Educate beat Refu ¬ gee six lingtbs for second place The Rogue who was fancied by many for second place could not get up a good sized gallop and was beaten off at the finish The last race of the day was a gift to Prince Blazes who had only to canter over the course to take down the purse He was in great fettle and showed the way for the entire route win ¬ ning easily by a length from Oxnard who was five in front of Knightbannoret The lastnamed was cut off badly at the far turn but even at that he could not run a little bit after he re ¬ covered He is of no present account and is probably in need of a long rest Fantasy backed by a select few as a sure thing ran well for a short quarter of a mile and then retired Papa Harry ran well for six and a half furlongs but died away after that
