COLDSTBEAMS DAM DAMA A dispatch from Lexington yesterday said The mare purporting to be Lady Dixon by Sir Dixon Bepeat and sold to James B Eeene as such was today identified by Colonel E F Clay as a mare bred by him and by Sir Dixon Bena Orr Colonel Clay the same year bred the real Lady Dixon Great interest attaches as Cold stream a 10000 twoyear old owned by Frank Van Meter is out of the disputed mare mareThis This is the outcomn of an entanglement that is causing Frank Van Meter much trouble The particulars wore thua set forth a few days ago in a dispatch from Lexington to a Cincin ¬ nati paper paperFrank Frank Van Meter is at Saratoga with his phenomenal colt Coldstream for which he was recently offered 10000 and is ready to give somebodys crack sprinter a good beating but he is not permitted by the stewards of the Jockey Club to start him until the question as to the pedigree of his dam which was raised within the past fortnight is settled An in ¬ vestigation in which parties in several differ ¬ ent cities are interested is now being prose ¬ cuted The case is decidedly unique and highly interesting There is nothing in the an ¬ nals of the turf which parallels it itIn In the winter of 1891 Colonel WE Applegato sent to Hardy Durham several yearlings to be trained Among them was a chestnut filly which was understood to be by Sir Dixon and out of Bepeat In the spring of 1595 when she was a twoyearold Colonel Jerry Delpb 8r took a half interest in this filly and his son Jockey Delph Jr trained and raced her as May Dixon by Sir Dixon Bepeat The filly was sick and was sent to Colonel Delphs farm Her veterin ¬ ary bills wore very large atd Colonel Applegate agreed that if Colonel Delph would pay the bills he should become the sole owner of the mare This was done doneIn In 1896 this mare was bred to Onondaga and a crippled foal was the result Next year she missed In 1898 she was brod to Onondaga and CONTINUED ON 8BOOND PAOB I OOLDBTHEAMS DAM Continued from First Page ia 1899 foaled the cole which was called Cold stream and which as a yearling Jnne 1900 was sold by the American Horse Exchange in New York for Colonel Delph to Overton H Chen anlt of Spendthrift Btud this city for 350 Mr Chenault shipped the colt to Chicago along with a number of others the following month and Coldstream was bought at public auction br Frank Van Meter of this city who has be ¬ come widely known aa the owner of His Emi ¬ nence winner of the Louisville Derby and later sold to Mackay for 20000 20000Van Van Meter took Coldstream to ILonisvlUo and broke him and trained him so successfully itfcatlaet Mayheworked faster than any two yearold had ever stepped over the Louisville track He negotiated a quarter in 022i three eighths in 035 and the half in 047 which was asseoond better than the track record held by Cteophus Believing that he had a cinch on the WenonahStakes Van Meter sent William Lewis of this city to Colonel Delph to get an option on the mare May Dixon Lewis took an option and deposited a neat sum to hold it When they came to the race there were several breakaways in which Coldstream was tired and the result was that Eddie Busch bsat him himout out outVan Van Meter never paid more attention to the option and let the mare go by the boards Al gernon Daingerfleld son of Major F A Dain gerneld manager of James R Eeenes Castle ton Stud came down from New York a few weeks ago and heard of the option which Van Meter had not taken He negotiated with Col ¬ onel Delph for the mare and purchased her She was sent to Castleton Stud When the an ¬ nouncement of the sale was made the reporters could find no May Dixon in the stud book but they found Lady Dixon described as a chestnut foaled 1S93 by Sir Dixon out of Repeat so it was sent out that Lady Dixon had been sold by Colonel Delph to Mejor Daingerfleld DaingerfleldThis This report attracted the attention of J H Eintz in Illinois and he communicated at once to Colonel Delph and Major Daingerfield that he was in possession of Lady Dixon by Sir Dixon Repeat and that be had owned her since she was a yearling and that the racing guides would show that he had raced her He said that he had purchased the mare at Colonel E F Clays sale of yearlings at Latonia in 1891 1891It It was never contended that Coldstream was out of Lady Dixon but that his dam is May Dixon but since both Lady Dixon and May Dixon are of tho eame age and are not twins they cannot be out of the same mare Colonel W E Applegate says that he recollects the tran ¬ saction between himself and Colonel Delph dis ¬ tinctly and that ha knew the mare as being by Sir Dixon out of Repeat but that he does not remember now when or where or from whom he got her herHardy Hardy Durham says the mare came to him as being by Sir Dixon out of Repeat but that he does not know where Colonel Applegato got her Colonel E F Clay was appaalod to today by telephone to Paris for information
