GOSSIP OF THE TURF Says a Lexington dispatch of Sunday to a Cin ¬ cinnati newspaper Fillies of royal breeding recently purchasad for Mr W K Vanderbilt have been turned over to T C McDowell to be trained at Ashland Farm near Lexington Ky They will ba raced as twoyearolds at the ex ¬ piration of which time they will ba sent to Mr Vanderbilts breeding establishment in France The following is a list of yearlings purchased purchasedBrown Brown filly by Halma Clatterfeet by Strath more moreChestnut Chestnut filly by Halma Palce by Macaroni MacaroniChestnut Chestnut filly by Ornament Oriana by Onon daga dagaChestnut Chestnut filly by Ornament Maggie Gray by Spendthrift SpendthriftChestnut Chestnut filly by Ornamant Von Hera by Hanover HanoverChestnut Chestnut filly by Ornament Charity by Spendthrift SpendthriftChoRtnut ChoRtnut filly by Ornament Alarming by Alarm AlarmBrown Brown filly by Ornament Happy Bailie by Petrach PetrachChestnut Chestnut colt by Halma Blarney by Shin glass glassThere There was considerable excitement in local social circles and in Kentucky generally when it was announced that McDowell had agreed to train for Vanderbilt They did not think that a member of an old Kentucky family combining the blood of the Clays and McDowells would enter the employ of any man as trainer and consent to be a social inferior There was con ¬ siderable relief in consequence when McDowell announced that such a statement was prepos ¬ terous and that he would have a partnership interest in all of the horeos under his care This probably means that McDowell will have an interest in the running qualities of those youngsters The New York Sun of Sunday says The story was revived yesterday that the Empire City track near Yonkers built by the late W H Clark will ba purchased by a syndicate of turf ¬ men and reopened to the public next year It was stated that P J Dwyer president of the Brooklyn Jockey Club is at tha head of the movement and that John B McDonald the Rapid Transit tunnel contractor has drawn up plans for needed improvements City Register Isaac Frommo who is counsel for the adminis ¬ trators Mrs Clark and her brother John B Sexton said yesterday in explanation of the situation Because of good and sufficient reasons it is deemed advisable to sell the Empire City track It is splendidly located and fully equipped and we know that it is eagerly desired for racing purposes So it is a safa conclusion that it will bring a good price Even if the men who wish to buy it as a track should not ba willing to pay a sufficient sum real estate oparators would readily take the property as its worth is estab ¬ lished and indubitable Racing men including Mr Dwyer professed to know nothing about the story They said that so far as they knew no negotiations had been opened and that under tha present state of affairs the track was undesirably located and could not be considered as a possibility until transit facilities have boon vastly improved
