HARLEMS GOOD KAOING The second week of Harlems summer meet ¬ ing opened most auspiciously yesterday with a large attendance and a splendid card of six races The weather was ideal and the track at its best The most pretentious race of the day was the fifth at one and threesixteenths for threeyearolds and upward Hermencia W Carrolls good fouryearold gelding proved to be the best winning rather handily at the end by a length from Alaska which beat Haviland the same distance for second place Alaskas sudden awakening was startling as with the same kind of a field a few days before he was beaten off from start to finish Haviland ap ¬ peared to have the race well in hand at the last eighth post but tired badly in the closing strides Loves Labor backed for a good thing ran well for a mile and then retired but may do better soon Frangible showed an im ¬ proved race and is about ready to win over a soft or muddy track trackThe The steeplechase proved to be fairly exciting fter the tenth jump bed been taken Flaccua moving up to Crest which had been in the lead up to this obatscle and caught her just ae he had entered the short stretch As they wheeled for home Flaccus bumped Crest off her stride toward the outside rail but she was well beaten at the time and the intarferance hardly made any difference in the result Flac CUB won well in hand by a neck while Grey John flniehad third twelve lengths behind The last named jumped fairly well but could not run fast over the flat Bone Setter went down over the first jump He then ran away and in ¬ jured himself eo that be had to be destroyed destroyedAn An unwieldy bunch of maidens twoyearold fillies lined up to the barrier in the first race sixteen in all responding to the bugle call Pronta was easily the beat acd after lying up to the head of the stretch came away in the last eighth winning hands down by three and a half lengths with Lucy Locket second one before Baby Hall The last named was tiring badly in the last hundred yards and just lasted long nough to beat the fast closing Arigato a head on thcpostfor third place The latter was as good as left and made up much ground She will bear watching in her class from now on Jane Oaker quit when the pinch came Mary Pine ran a dull race raceOn On the strength of his good showing with George Arnold August 8 St Cuthbert was made a decided favorite in the sprint race the second on the card He was in fine form and grabbed the fleetfooted Money Muss from the very start The twofran head and head to the run in where St Cuthbert lost about a length by turning wide but he made up the lost ground fast in the last eighth He kept slightly bearing in on the tiring Money Mnis in the closing strides finally winninglby a length Money Muss was so spent at the wire that he barely got his head under it in front of the fast closing Maggie Davis which would have been second in one more stride Henry of Trastamare ran a fair race closing up with determination in the last sixteenth after being badly outrun in the first part of the race Theory was well up to a fnrlong out but fell away gradually from there home The rest were always outrun outrunTorn Torn about is fair play in thefcase of McChes ney and Lord Quex this time the latter revers ¬ ing the verdict of the former against him at even weights last week Lord Quex put up an excellent performance and easily showed his superiority over McChcsney when it comes to packing weight When the latter beat him they carried only 98 pounds but yesterday they picked up nine pounds more and Lord Quex TirtnalJylran away from him He led from start to finish winning easily by two and a half lengths while McChesney beat Rosewar one and a half for second place The last named bad a close call for third money as Marqne would have grabbed it in a stride or two Rose war was out to the last ounce in the closing strides after lying in second position up to this point It was the first time Marque had start ed hereabouts and her showing was a creditable one Miracle II ran an improved race He runs best in the mud mudSam Sam Lazarus Esq carried off the last race in a red hot finish by a head from W B Gates which beat Mondoro a half length for second place Sam Lazarus Eeqs win was a lucky one as with any kind of racing luok W B Gates would have surely wou He was messed about in the early stages of the race and then finished with a fine rush Mondoro tired in the closing strides after appearing to be the probable win ¬ ner at the last eighth pole Nettie Regent was the victim of a bad ride and was pocketed all the way down the stretch on the inside rail Hylo showed a little early speed
