SU-PRI ES AT WORTH. The sudden change to cool weather had no deterrent eff- ct on the gathering at Worth yesterday, the utual lTg crowd being on hand. The sport was pood throughout and some exciting racing was witnessed. The day was re pletn with surprises, not a favorite passing over tho line first, with the exception of Amote in tho last race. The feature event of the day was The Engle-wood Handicap, a dash of one mile for thre-yoar-ods and upward with 5700 addod The ovent was shorn of its interest by the withdrawing of three rf the six carded to start leaviog Haviland, Vulcain and 8earcher to contest for the stake. Tho latter two were coupled in the batting as tho Bildreth entry which was held at from 3 to 5 to 1 to 2 in the betting. The talent picked upon Vulcain as tho winner but be had t j bow in fubmiEeion to Haviland whi h took the track at ling fall and remainoi in front to the end winning in a canter by two lengths while Valcain beat his stable companion one for eecond place. Coburn triad hard to close on Haviland in the first half bat the latter held him safely for the entire journey. Lucieu Appleby proved to be the best in the third race, a dash of seven furlongs for two-year-olde. Merriment was made a decided favorite, being held at even money in the betting, but the beBt she could do was to finish fourth. After Miss Hume had run hereelf into exhaus-1 tion in the first half milo, Golden Glitter as-snmd command and held it by a safe margin up to the last sixteenth where Lncien Appleby come with a rush and in a hot tilt beat out Golden Glitter a nock on the post. Brags finished third two lengths back. He closed up fBt na usual, but too late to bo of any avail. Merriment was badly interfered with when turning for homo and was virtually thrown out of the contest. John Grigeby, long overdue, took the days opener, a dash of six furlongs, in easy fashion by two- le gths from Fleetwing, which came fast in the last eighth and nipped Star of Bethlehem a head on the post for second place. Sim W. as unal ran a dull race. Coburn gave the winner a faultless ride, avoiding the early pace and making his run at the right time. Old Prince Blazes bad litto trouble in taking the one and nno-quarter mile race, coming fast down the last quarter and winning in a canter by four lengths. Deloraine finished second a lngth before Barilla. El Caney and 8arilla had onough when turning for home. Miss Liza was the victim of a poor ride. Bival Dare, despite the fact that eho carried top weight, boat a fair field of sprinters in the fifth race. 8he was called upon in the last eighth and responded with a Bharn buret of speed, winning by a short length from The Boer, which came fast in the last furlong, but could not quite get up. Mountebank finished a bang up third. B-omerack was right there for fiv and a half furlongs.! Amote took the last race, a dash of five and a half f irlongs for two-year olds, in a hard drive by a neck from Lou Woods, which bsat Dan-dola two for second place. Smiths Reel ran well for five furlongs. Frank Jones finished fast in the last sixteenth. On the patrol judges report that Coburn, on Little 8cout and dicks, on Miss Hume, had both interfered with Merriment, the judges assessed a fine of 00 against Coburn and 0 against Hicks. Kellv waB scheduled to ride Rival Dare, but the judges thought him unable to do tho mount justice and substituted Coburn.
