ENDURANCE RY BIGHT. Early in tha month of Duccmbir, 1SC0, at the annual Woodard and Shanklin Balo held at Lexington, Ky , a bay yearling filly was bought by Col. William 8. Barnes, proprietor of tho famous Melbourne etod, for tho modest Bnm of 50. She had been pat in tho sale list by Col. Milton Young, ho having purchased .her and her dam from Gen. W. H. Jackson. She web by Inspector B. Early Morn and Colonel Barnes nemod her Endnranco by Bight. Then little thought of, she is now tho most famous of her age and sex in America, and one about -which so competent an authority as Hugh D. Mclntyre recently wrote: "Endurance by Bight is not only the beat filly I ever saw, but she is in my judgment far and away the beat two-yaar-old of the sea-eon. Neither Yankee, Blue Girl. Nasturtium nor Heno is in her class, in my opinion. Should she train on, and there is no apparent reason now why she should not, sha will be in a class by herself next season." This is not an extravagant estimate. Any weight and any distance suits her and her speed is of thq highest order. A horso of hor equablo temperament is more likely to train on well than a high strung, nervous horee. In the spring of 1901 she was sent to Memphis along with a dozan or more horses belonging to Colonel Barnes and put in training. Apparently her trainer was not specially imprassed with her promisa, but that shrewd judge of the capabilities of a race horse, John W. 8chorr, saw enough in her work to make him dosire to possess her, so he made a deal whereby he secured hor running qualities for, it is Baid, the sum of -51,200. It was a bad deal for Colonel Barnes and a notably good one for Mr. Schorr. With the racing of the year practically over, except on the wintor tracks, a recital of her performances is in order and will do to hold in memory when the campaign of 1902 comas up for consideration. Her first start was in a half mile dash for a purse at Memphis last spring, April 19, which she won by two lengths from Herodiade with Attelle third, Lena Schady, Winter Bell, Lady Burlington, Hunter Raine, Jaubert and Easter Boy running unplaced. She was known to have shown well in her work and went to the post a 6 to 5 favorite. The time was 53 seconds and andb subsequent racing has shown she by far outclassed her opponents. Bhe Btarted no more at Memphis, being sent from there to Louisville. Here she was seut to the post on the opening day of the mooting to contest for a purse at a half milo and was a 7 to 10 favorite in a field of eleven fillies. She won by a length in 49 seconds, running on the outside all the way and necessarily covering much more ground than the majority of her opponents. Miss Thomey was second and Scortic third, the unplaced ones being Drummond, Our Jessie, Lady Maxim, Dodie 8., Cousine, The Fashion, Pearl Ban, Miss Gaines andAttelle, the latter being left at the post. At the same track May 8 she met the first defat that marks her career. The track was muddy, the distance five furlongs and as usual she was an oddB on favorite at 7 to 10 but third was the best she could do, Eunnels, a 40 to 1 shot, leading throughout and winning by three lengths with Harry Beck second, a length and a half before Endurance by Bight. It was the big fillys introduction to mud and ehe could not extend herself in it, a useful point for her admirers of today to bear in mind. Behind her finished Belles Commoner, Kentucky Mud-die, Corinne C, Lady Appleby and The Boston, and the race was rua in 1 :03. This defeat endad her Louisville campaign. She was now taken to Latonta.to fill her first stake engagement of the year the Clipsatta a dish of five furlongs for fillies. The race was run May 16, and tho starters wore Endurance by Bight, 110 pounds; Foundling, 112; Lingo, 10G5; Almanzo, 103; Julia Junkin. 103; Mamie English, 107; Jean Raphael, 103; Throstle, 1014, and Wedding March, 107. Sho won but only at tho end of a sharp drive. Foundling, a smart filly herself, took tho lead and the rail and held it to near the ond where Endurance by Bight, running on the oxtremo outside nearly all the way, got up and driving out won by a half length in l:02i. Lingo was third a length behind Foundling. It was a smashing good race for the winner as, owing to her position, she covered many more lengths than Foundling. Tha stake was worth ,235 net and Endurance by Bight was a 6 to 5 favorite. The good filly was now brought to Chicago, and here sho achieved fame and won for herself a host of adherents ready to back her to defeat any filly in the land, to Bay nothing of the colts. Her bow to the local raco going public was at Hawthorn June 1, when she was brought out to do battle for the Lassie Btakes at five furlongs. The starters were. Endurance by Bight, 118; Do- J ENDURANCE BY. EIGHT, B. F, BY INSPECTOR B. EARLY MORN. j reen, 115; April, 110; Fronta,110 and Barouche, 115. As by rights she should have been, she was a 7 to 10 favorite and the winner, but did not appear to have any too easy a time of it, as Woods had to shake her up sharply when a furlong out. She won by a length and a half however, with Doreen second, a length before April. The time was fast, 1 :01. Doreen herself ran a good race, the best she had shown since coming from California. Her next essay waB at Harlem June 12, when she was started in the Petite Stakes, a dash of li furlongs, for which oleven fillies went to the poet. They were Endurance by Right, 120 pounds; Throstle, 110; Mabel Winn, 112; April, 110; Autumn Loaves, 115; Baronche, 115; Lingo, 105; Quality, 105; Mamie English, 115; Hoodwink, 112 and Doreen, 115. Thore was a notion abroad that Doroen was dangerous and the reflection of this notion in the betting ring caused the opening odds of 6 to 5 against Endurancs by Bight to expand to 11 to 5 at post time. As a sequal she won in a canter by three lengths while Doreen got off so badly that no effort was : made with hor and she finished last. Endurance by Right ran second to the stretch then drew out and won easing up, Throstle sscond two lengths beforo Mabel Winn. Timo, 5G seconds. On tho opening day of tho Washington Park mesting she proved that she was able to show hor dainty haels to the good coltB aB efftctivoly as she had been doing with those of her own sex. This was in a dash of four and a half furlongs in which with 120 pounds up she met Magi, 115; Pentecost, 123; Bluo Mantel, 111; Runnels, 118; The Four Hundred, 115; Bed Hook. 118; Bridge, 118; Frank Mc, 111; Qt. Savor, 108; Bragg, 118; William H 118; Tho Boston, 115, and Corinne Unland, 108, and ran away from them, winning by two lengths in 54?s seconds, with Magi second and Pentecost third. Than sho emphasized her excellence by winning tho Lakeside Stakes, June 25, and putting on record a grand performance. Allan-a-Dale with 111 pounds in the saddle had just croated a furore by breaking the track record at five furlongs, running it in 1:C0, but she immediately overshadowed this fine racing foat by taking up 122 pounds and running the distance in one minute flat. Oppoaed to her were Sweet Billie, 115 pounds; Sister Jeanie, 115 ; Wainamoinen, 120; Flora Pomona, 118; Pronta 110 and Doreen 115. Sweet Billie led around to and into the stretch at a heart breaking rate of speed, with Endurance by Bight running in third place to midway of the stretch where she set Bail for tho flying leader and Boon having her in trouble, drew away and won by two lengths amid thunderous applause, her rush down the stretch being of the order that makes people got on their feet and open their throats wide. This grand filly confirmed her greatness July 20 by taking up 122 pounds in an overnight ,400 handicap at five furlcngs and defeating Elsie L., 114; Old Hutch, 110; Ed Austin, 120; BoBewar, 100; J. V. Kirby, 109; Jaubert, 1121 ; Sister Jeanie, 110; Jack Battlin, 112 ; Jordan, 107; Wainamoinen, 115, and South Elk-hom, 109, doing thb disiaucu in 1:Uj, aud winning with a tremendous burst of speed through I OOKTIKDBD ON SECOND ffAGB, ,ENDTJBANCE BY BIGHT. i t Continued from First Page. i 1 the last sixteenth after having- seemed to be hopelessly entangled and pocketed. j This terminated her western career and she was taken to Saratoga, where she was started August IS for a 00 purse over a six furlongs course. Sho carried 122 pounds and had for opponents Tribes Hill, 106; Gunfire, 117; Old : Hntch, 98; Belles Commoner, 110; Sister Juliet, i 103; Lady Sterling, 99; Grail. 108, and Whiskey i King, 113. It was only an exercise gallop for ; her to defeat this field, and yet as good as 11 to : 5 was an offer against her at poBt time. She i was never extended and won by a length and a half in 1 :14, with Tribes Hill second and Gunfire third. This waB her only start at Saratoga, but while there Mr. Schorr purchased her outright from; Colonel Barnes lor a piico that has never been authentically stated. From Saratoga Endurance by Bight was taken to Sheepshead Bay to meet the shining lights of her age. Her firBtlessay was in the Flatbush Stakes September 4. It was a dash of seven furlongs for which the starters were Nasturtium, 115; Goldsmith, 115; Endurance by Bight, 112; Baron, 105; Sir Oliver, 115; Bmart Bet, 120; Flywheel, 115; Dixieline, 115 and Hyphen, 115. It was a grand field, and a grand race resulted. Displaying a marvelous flight of speed, Nasturtium led from start to finish and won by a half length, with Goldsmith second as far in front of Endurance by Bight, the sovod furlongs having been covered in such remarkable time as 1:25. Tha others wero outpaced throughout. Mr. Bchorr stated afterwards that the filly was not at her best that day and basidee she was pinned in between the two colts at the end and so at a decided disadvantage. From that day on she never knew defeat and became the idol of all New York patrons of racing. Her next start was at five furlong with 126 pounds up for a purse which she won in a canter, defeating an indifferent field in 1 :07, being a 1 to 3 favorite. This race was run September 6. Four daye lator carrying 121 pounds Bhe beat Caughnawaga, 107 ; Belles Commoner, 107 and six others at six furlongs, done in 1:13J with supreme ease, being again for a purse. Beptembor 14 she won her most valuable stako of her two-year-old career. This was the Great Eastern Handicap at six furlongs, ,5CO guaranteed, for which she carried 126 pounds. Bhe won in a canter by two lengths in 1:13, defeating Sombrero, 107; Otis, 114; Feme Sole, 98; Peninsula, 100; Par Excellence, 100; Sombre, 99; Igniter, 113; Saturday, 111; Major Daingor-field, 108; Jim Tully, 106; Bon Mot, 99, and Leslie Bruce, 88. Despite the big field she was a 7 to 10 favorite. This was her last race at 8heeps-head Bay, her next start being at Gravesend September 20 for the Willow Stakes, a dash of five and a half furlongs for two-year-old fillies. Bhe carried 119 pounds and had Hanover Qusen, 115; Bockwater, 107; Early Eve, 99; Amicitla, 119, and Pretoria, 99, for opponents. It was supposed Mr. Belmonts fine filly Amicitia would be able to give her a good race, but it ; was the same old story, "won in a canter," she finished first in 1:03 by two and a half lengths , with Hanover Queen second and Bockwater . third. This success she; followed up with the , most remarkable performance of her career . when she Won the Holly Handicap, also a dash of five and a half furlongB. For this Bhe was. , given the high impost of 139 pounds, the other . starters being Whiskey King, 110; Chilton, 115; . King Hanover, 115; Tribes Hill, 104; Grail, 93; . Masterman, 117; Lord Quex, 97; Betauket, 99; . Tha Rival, 113; Bmart Bet, 120; Pentecost, 118, and Highlander, 116. It was a duel between L her and Whiskey King throughout and at the , end she was an easy winner by a length in 1 :07, t with Chilton a poor third, It was a performance . without precedent in the hiBtory of racing in this country and it was immediately declared that she waB tho greatest filly that had ever appeared in America. The result of this race was talk of a match with Mr. Mackays crack Colt Heno over the "about" six furlongs course that led tho Brooklyn Jockey Club to offer the Third Special, with ,5C0 added, expecting others to start, but only tho two went.to the post. Endurance by Bight took the load; soon aftor the start and kept it to the end, winning handily by a length in 1:082s, which broke the record for tho course by nearly two seconds. It was such a remarkably speedy performance that Heno was in no wise discredited by his defeat. Endurance by Bight was then sold to Mt. William C. Whitney for the reputed price of S35,iGO, and started but onco more. This was for the Champagne Stakes at Morris Park October 19, for which her now stable companion, Yankee, accompanied her to tho post. As their only opponents wore Caughnawaga and Luck and Charity, they galloped along under strong i t i 1 j restraint throughout, the filly finishing first by two lengths, with Yankee second and "Caughna- j waga third, ;the seven furlongs being done in 1:28. This was the termination of a truly glorious career that may be more than equaled in 1902.
