WASHINGTON PARK STAKES Says the Spirit of the Times The summer meet ¬ ing at Washington Park Chicago is the swell function of western racing and horsemen should give due attention to the liberal program which can scarcely fail to bring together horses of high class breeding and reputation from all points of the compass Racing will be conducted under Western Jockey Club rules the list is an unusually attractive one the lavish generosity promised two years ago fulfilled last year is again demonstrated In other words the big stakes retain all last years large added moneys while in some cases increases have been made at the same time no purse is less than 600 and the overnight handicaps rate from 1 000 upward showing that the smaller owners have by no means been neglected or left out in the cold All of which is correctly and truly said saidNext Next Wednesday the stakes offered by this truly great racing organization will close for entries hat they will be liberally patronized every one cnows for Washington Park is the recognized corner stone of western racing and the munificent endowment of its numerous stakes always suffices to attract the cream of each year s good horses There will be no failure or falling oil m this respect this year and there are elements in view at present that seem to indicate that the American Derby of this year will be of the most absorbing interest In California for instance the form of the best three yearolds is much higher than in any year since in 1892 Col Harry Thornton and Thomas H Williams brought aboutthe establishment of racing on mod ern lines From there alone may bo expected such tried highclass threeyearolds as Cruzados Old England Sombrero Homestead and Siu Nicholas all horses of remarkable speed whereas last year California could not muster a single candidate deemed good enough to go to the post postThe The terms of all the stakes offered by the star club of the west appear in this issue and DAILY EACING FORM will furnish entrv blanks to all who may need them Owners who have deferred mak ¬ ing entries now have but little time to spare and should send iu their nominations to becretary How ¬ ard at once
