GOSSIP OF THE TURF J R F P Keeues noted fiveyearold horse Disguise II which won the Jockey Club Stakes worth 50000 in England during the season of 1900 will be retired to the stud at the close of the coming English racing season Major F A Daingerfield manager of the Keenes Castleton stud at Lexing ¬ ton Ky recently received word that Disguise II would be sent to Castleton to join the famous Com ¬ mando as representative of the Domino line of blood The Keenes have entered Disguise II in all the more important handicaps this spring where he will meet the besfhorses owned by WCWhit ¬ ney and King Edward VII His principal engage ¬ ments are the Lincolnshire Handicap Kempton Park Queens Prize the City and Suburban at Ep ¬ som and the Chester Cup CupA A meeting of the stewards of the Jockey Club was held at New York February 19 August Belmont presiding The following racing officials were ap ¬ pointed Starter C J Fitzgerald judges Clar ¬ ence McDowell and G H Pettingill clerk of scales H G Crickmore handicappor and forfeit clerk W S Vosburgh timer W H Berrett pad ¬ dock and patrol judge J L Hall A recommenda ¬ tion was made to all associations racing under Jockey Club rules that all races be started without recall and with a barrier released by electrical or mechanical device approved by the Jockey Club and that all owners and trainers are expected to have their horses properly trained to start On the recommendation of the stewards of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association the ch g High Strung was reinstated for steeplechase and hurdle Much against his will Burt Knapp the well known local jockey and who rode successfully in France last year is a passenger on the Kaiser Wil helm der Grosse which left New York several days ago for Europe Knapp intended to make the trip later in the season but went down to see some of his friends oft and while engaged iu conversation with Milton Henry and his wife no attention was paid to the cry of All ashore and before he knew it the great vessel was in the stream and on her way to Europe Judge Morrow of Nashville Tenn does not seem to think well of the idea of building a mile track at Atlanta or of holding a winter meeting there The course over which they will build has a deep gulch in it He says it will bo impossible to hold a winter meeting in Atlanta on Account of the weather and does not think one could be hold in Atlanta any better than it could be held in Nashville It is said that President Wall has secured a fiveyear lease on the Piedmont track and will open a meeting December 1 lasting 120 days Four more disagree ¬ able months could not well have been picked out of the entire year Then too unless Wall is able to secure a license from some reputable racing asso ¬ ciation under which the meeting can be held the best horsemen will not send their horses there for fear of being outlawed Sam Wagner manager of the Worth race track after seeing Federal from Sam Hildreths stable work at Memphis several days ago and noting his condition offered to bookmaker Joe Ullman a 500 commission qn Federals chances in the winter book on the Montgomery Handicap The price was 40 to 1 and Ullman refused to accept but 200 of Wagners offer
