GOSSIP OF THE TURF The New Orleans Picayune of February 23 has this to say of Judge Rees action in the recent steeplechase scandals The longpromised finding of the stewards in connection with the steeplechases run here this winter which have created no end of scandal was landed out this afternoon As predicted the rul ¬ ing was a sweeping one and among tliose suspended were twelve jockeys eight horses and as many owners and trainers The matter will bo gone into thoroughly by the officials and no effort will be spared to find the guilty parties Whiliy it is hard on the association o have fE fEe e can3aTs crpr piiQg up so frequently still it shows that the officials are doing all in their power to purify matters and they certainly deserve the support of all those who have the true interest of the sport at heart The ruling in full is as follows New Orleans La FebruaryI22 1902 Secretary Clark The following named jockeys horses their owners and trainers are suspended pending investi ¬ gation of the steeplechase races in which they have participated at this meeting Jockeys G Ellison D Brazil A Bartley W Penn D Gaddy A Johnson H Hayes G Wilson T McHugh J M Gormley R Slater J Weber Horses Coley Dagmar Bristol MacLaren Falella DivertissomentW H Dixon Miss Ransom By order of the Board of Stewards CEESCENT CITY JOCKEY CLUB The running of the horses the riding of the jockeys and the evidence obtained otherwise war ¬ rants the suspensions named in order to fix the responsibility and punish the guilty guiltyIt It appears that jockey G Ellison was the head of a syndicate who apparently fixed the results of the different steeplechase events Their plans wore well laid and in selecting a winner they chose one who had a reasonable chance on form to win con ¬ dition of track field weights etc considered to avoid a repetition of the sequel of the Lizzie Kelly race last season and apparently as long as there were no dissensions among them they cashed cashedThe The different races declared off from time to time was for a purpose in connection with our sus ¬ picions picionsBrazils Brazils part in the affair will probably mean an end of his career in the east It is understood that he was one of the leaders of tho gang Ellison it is claimed has put his share of the spoils to good use and that he has purchased a hotel in Bramp ton Canada CanadaNo No action has yet been taken in regard to the local business men said to bo connected with the fraud Several of them besides a couple of book ¬ makers will also come under the ban before the stewards are through with tho case In the Circuit Court at Louisville lastJSaturday Judge Fields in sustaining the demurrer of the New Louisville Jockey Club to an amended petition of T P Hayes tho turfman in his suit for 50000 damages on account of the refusal of the club to receive his entries at the race meeting last spring hold that the jockey club is not a public associa ¬ tion and has the right to do business or refuse to do business with any persons whomsoever it chooses This practically ends the suit as Judge Fields has already sustained a demurrer to the original peti tion
