GOSSIP OF THE TURF Ed Corrigan the Chicago turfman is at New r Orleans MrCorrigan says that the purpose of his visit to the Crescent City at the present time is to 3 secure if possible a jockey to do the heavyweight Tiding for his stable the coming season The Waldo brothers were with him in EnglanU last season and 1 Willie the younger of the brothers will he says be 3 with him again the coming season to do his light ¬ weight riding As the rugged old turfman has fifty horses in the string which will carry his colors in ¬ cluding seventeen which he imported from England he feels that it is imperative that he secure another jockey His chances for picking up at New Orleans such a rider as he wants are slim Report has it that if he cannot get a boy he will endeavor to se ¬ cure second call on OBrien who is under contract to Tichenor Newgass Another report is to the effect that he has about secured the services of jockey J Miller Two additional entries have been received for the Metropolitan Handicap to be run May 3 at Morris Park They are Herbert and Joe Frey It was thought strange when the official list of entries was first published that Herbert was not included Herbert is entered in the other big handicaps and as he has developed into a fine race horse his pres ¬ ence in the Metropolitan was all along expected The Metropolitans entries now number sixtytwo which shows that racing will receive a big boom from the very beginning of the season there thereThere There is much interest in the stable of W K Van 3erbilt which will take part in the Eastern cam ¬ paign this year It is said that he will place the most confidence in his twoyearolds by the noted Ornament who among other achievements won the Brooklyn Handicap in 1898 In the Clover Stakes to be run at Gravesend Mr Vanderbilt has entered three fillies one by Ornament Happy Sally II another by Ornament Alarming and a third by Halma Charity In the Manhansett Stakes he has entered a filly by Ornament Maggie Gray and another by Ornament Maid of Kent For the Han ¬ over Stakes Mr Vanderbilts nomination is a filly by Ornament Charity Ornament was considered in his prime one of the best race horses that ever faced a starter The victory of Gold Ornament in a recent stake event at New Orleans was the first triumph of Ornaments get and and was particular ¬ ly gratifying to Mr Vanderbilt The work of the Ornament twoyearolds therefore will bo watched with interest for young sires are fashionable nowa ¬ days especially in view of the showing made by the get of Halma and The Commoner both sons of Hanover last year M J Maloney of Toronto has arrived at the Bennings track with a string of nine among them George W Jenkins Silas Ohnet and Three Hot Days a maiden full brother to Ohnet The weather is improving in the vicinity of Washington and by the first of next week the trainers expect to get down to real work They will have twentyfive days from Saturday next in which to prepare their horses for the spring meeting The management failed in the effort to get the street car company to extend it tracks to the grand stand but will build a board walk from the street The betting shed has been made longer and wider and the jockey room has been enlarged so that it will accommo ¬ date sixty boys instead of twentyfive as in the past Garry Herrmann Captain S S Browns groat colt by Esher Silk Gown reached trainer Peter Wim mers stable at Sheepshead Bay Wednesday and will be prepared for the big handicaps The colt apparently has entirely recovered from the ailments which put him on the shelf early last season and expertswho have examined him are unanimous in the opinion that he probably will stand training and give a good account of himself in his fouryear old form Another notable acquisition to Wimmers stable is Scioto a twoyearold filly by Wagner Fondling and consequently a full sister to Imp Scioto is brown in color but in conformation bears considerable resemblance to her famous black sis ter She like Imp belongs to the estate of the late D R Harness of Chillicotho Ohio Before his death Uncle Dan Harness wrote to Wimmer con corning this filly She is very fast fast without moving poles
