GOSSIP OF THE TURF TURFThe The London Sportsman says that the prospects of Mr Whitneys Nasturtium winning the Derby are not rosy Since the arrival of the horse in England he has wasted and lost muscle He has not yot done any work on the heath His excerciso is re ¬ stricted to walking in the home paddock F D Foss representing the new Buffalo N Y track in course of construction says that a Derby would be offered for decision during the summer meeting which would rank in value with any race in the west westTwenty Twenty thousand dollars will be added to the Buffalo Derby and other stakes correspondingly large for older and younger horses will be hung up E S Gardner has sold to John E Madden the Lexington turfman the good twoyearold brown colt by Tithonus Cais Trade Wind by Great Tom second dam Sue Wynne by Vandal This youngster was purchased at the annual sale of the Belle Meado yearlings in New York last year by Gardner for 600 Gardner disposed of the colt for 5000 a pretty long price The son of Tithonus has been highly tried and is a good horse of largo bone and conformation He is a half brother to Gotham and Ruth Black a winner at two years old in 1898 and is engaged in the Coney Island Futurity of 1902 John E Madden owner of Hambug Place Lex ¬ ington Ky has offered H H Stanhope of that city 1500 for the sixyearold chestnut mare Mare chal Neil full sister to The Commoner by Hanover Margerine by Algerine Stanhope to keep the foal which she is now carrying by Sorcerer Marechal Neil was sold under conditions as a yearling to Richard Croker for 2500 but a few days before the time set for shipment to England she jumped a fence injuring her back in such a Way as to be unfit for racing purposes which brought about a release from the sale contract She has one foal a two yearold filly by Forester now in the stable of Cy Hughes at the Kentucky Association track Mare ¬ chal Noil is the only full sister to the great horso for which General W H Jackson of Belle Meade stud refused 50000 last week She is also a half sister to Margerique dam of Nasturtium W C Whitneys sensational English Derby candidate candidateLongshore Longshore tho dam of Applegate Winged Foot and others by Longfellow Seashore by King Ban owned by Elliott C Cowdin of Mt Kisco N Y has slipped a filly foal by Requital winner of the Futurity and Realization at T C McDowells Ash land stud near Lexington Ky The loss is a severe one to Mr Cowdin
