GOSSIP OF THE TURF Frank Rice and May Allen are the first of the get of Dr Rice to race neither having been unplaced in the six starts which they have jointly made This is something of a recommendation for the Brooklyn Handicap winner as a sire Not only the two named but all the others as well of his first crop of youngsters including the sensational Con ¬ stance IV colt for which Tichenor Newgass paid a stiff price as a yearling have shown that he has transmitted his great speed to his get Frank Bice has exhibited remarkable gameness but no line has been had on the filly in this particular for the simple reason that her present owner S A White has indulged her right along and has never done enough with her to get her ready to race Up to her first start the best work ho had given her was a half mile in 51 seconds over a pasteboard track and then the exercise boy who was on her back was given emphatic orders not to let her run fast It was undoubtedly from lack of condition and not want of courage that she stopped in her two runs in each of which she outran her company to below the last sixteenth post Under the system of hand ¬ ling pursued by her owner trainer she will have to bo raced into condition before a true lino can be had on her real worth It is a sure thing though that she is possessed of a remarkable turn of speed The following from the Turf Field and Farm is a very timely suggestion The good showing of the fillies last season should encourage the racing as ¬ sociations to increase the number of stakes and races for iillies exclusively as well as overcome the prejudice which has always existed against them The season developed an unusually large number of phenomenally good fillies of different ages espec ¬ ially in the twoyearold division Among the win ¬ ning twoyearolds of the season us arranged under their sires the fillies aru unusually conspicuous and in a number of cases the best representatives of their sires and while some showed their ability to meet and defeat the best of the colts on even terms the fillies of lower class would have been better bread winners had there been more races ex ¬ clusively for their sex Of course such fillies as Endurance by Right Blue Girl Leonora Loriny Huutressa and a number of others can hold their own in any kind of company but the great bulk of the sex deserve special chances such as exclusive races would give them Of course the stakes for the coming season have been announced and many of them closed so that there can be no more filly stakes exclusively until later on but in the ar ¬ rangement of daily programs the racing associa ¬ tions should have an eye to making more overnight events for fillies and mares exclusively Of the present eligibles to the Kentucky Derby there are exactly sixteen colts receiving their pre ¬ liminary preparation at Montgomery Park Mem ¬ phis Tenn and included in this number are doubt ¬ less the first second and third choices in the estimation of form figurers Abe Frank G C Bennetts Hanover colt AllanaDale T C McDowells son of Halma a son of Hanover Larry Young J W Schorrs untried son of Potomac winner of the richest Futurity ever con ¬ tested for Red Hook the Texas bred scion of Gal ¬ lantrys line Harry New W H Laudemans win ¬ ner of last season Blennenworth G C Bennetts much improved purchase from Daniel OBrien Harry Wilson Brannigan Charles W Meyer The Rival Herodiade and W M Wallaces maiden son of Wagner Sulerman are among the list which are being hurried for forthcoming turf engagements either in the Derby or other threeyearold classics
