GOSSIP OF THE TURF Jofin Gardner the former jockey who arrived in Cincinnati from San Francisco about a week ago to secure treatment for his eyes has left the hospital after having an operation performed on the right optic He will remain west until the first of next week when he goes east in the interest of G B Morris with whom he is now identified Speaking of Mr Morris horses he said recently I consider Old England the best of his threeyearolds He is a fine colt and is as speedy as the wind He will get the money sure While Sombrero has beaten everything he has raced against this year and has shown a liking particularly for the mud and is a good weight carrier I do not consider him the equal of Old England Word comes from England that Foxhall Keenes fouryearold colt Olympian is working remarkably well and may bo a starter in the Lincolnshire Mr Keene who is at Newmarket has been watching Olympian at work under the watchful eyes of Felix Loach the stables regular trainer and is said to have expressed the belief that the noted son of Domino has a great year before him Superintendent Joseph Eeilly of Queens County Jockey Club says there has never been so great a demand for stable room at the Aqueduct track and that in order to accommodate the horsemen several new stables will be constructed there before the spring meeting opens on April 15 It is believed that one of the features of the Aqueduct meeting will be the trying out of numerous twoyearolds as a majority of the stables have entered youngsters in the various events The improvements begun at the track last fall have been completed so that the public may look for up to date accommodations W C Whitneys Nasturtium is no longer favorite for the Epsom Derby He has receded to third choice Mr Whitneys other threeyearold In ¬ truder IT is now regarded as a possible winner in view of the fact that after standing the effects of Ms ocean voyage well he has proceeded to work along with much promise Trainer John Huggins who has taken charge of the Whitney stable on the other side says that he has not begun to subject Nasturtium to a severe course of training because ihe colt has not yet fully recovered from bis recent illness but that in his belief the famous son of Watercress will come around all right in time for the big race Water Color and Koehampton two of the four yearold nominations for the Metropol ¬ itan Handicap may be bet on with reason ¬ able certainty when the future books begin to quote prices about the great Morris Park Special Barring accidents they will be starters Charles Littlefield who trains the Watercress colt for J B Haggin and J G Follansbee the owner of Roehampton have both declared that they were satisfied with the weights and would point their horses for the Metropolitan A great many things may happen to a couple of horses in two months the length of time that must elapse before the Metropolitan is run but men who gamble in winter books must take chances to get long prices and it is safer to support animals whose owners are known to be getting ready for a particular race than to back the candidates of men who keep their plans secret Daily America Since the success of Halma and The Commoner sons of Hanover are in great demand for sires Eastern turfmen are now negotiating for Hanwell a son of Hanover and it is said a price of 20000 has been put on him
