GOSSIP OF THE TURF Up to and including March 1 the new California Jockey Club has distributed 307800 among owners whose horses have contested for stakes and purses at the Oakland track The stable of Green B Mor ¬ ris heads the list with 25430 to its credit To this sum must be added the 1500 won by Artvis when that colt captured The Bell Stakes on Saturday Following is a list of stables that have won more than 3000 GBMorris 25430 Burns Water house 18700 Caesar Young 17825 W B Jen ¬ nings Co 14080 E J Baldwin Co 6650 James Coffey 6650 W H Ketchiman 6145 J F Schorr 6045 C Lind 5560 H E Rowell 5370 5370P P Ryan 5150 Louis A Cella has received word from C A Til les who is now at Little Rock to the effect that John Schorr G C Bennett and S C Hildreth have all engaged stable room Schorr writes that he will bring H L Coleman Larry Young and a select division of his twoyearolds Larry Young is said to be the Schorr stables reliance for the Tennessee Derby and horsemen will watch his races at Little Bock with much interest Larry Young is the colt that JSchorf named in honor of the president of the Washington Park Club of Chicago The first of the New Orleans contingont of horses which will race at the Memphis meeting arrived at Montgomery Park last Sunday and embraces the string of Thomas Carey the Chicago alderman with Malay and Reseda Montgomery Handicap candidates Nellie Waddell and two others James Arthur with six head also arrived and two belong ¬ ing to E Trotter completed the list Hardy B Durham the noted trainer who has handled so many famous racers in the last fifteen years will ship his string of ten head from Lexing ¬ ton Ky to Louisville in a few days where they will receive the finishing touches to their prepara ¬ tion and begin the coming campaign at that place They have all wintered well at Horse Haven farm and look lusty and strong Mr W C Whitney is having ill luck with his stable this year Hardly a week has passed of late but either death or sickness has been recorded at his Westbury establishment Now comes the news that Endurance by Right has been attacked with the much dreaded influenza While the ailment is not considered very serious in the case of this high class filly yet those who have had to do with influenza well know that when a horse is once attacked either in a mild or violent form there is no telling the result Assistant secretary J B Dillon of the Latonia Jockey XJlub who has been confined to his home in Covington Ky for about ten days with a fever is convalescing and with good weather will be in his office in a day or two Mr Dillon had juSt got the entries to the spring stakes in shape when he was taken ill and during his confinement the lists were in the hands of the printer and the stake books will be issued in a few days daysA A Lexington turf authority figures Sir Dixon the leading winning stallion in America his sons and daughters capturing on the turf last year 16568250 Hanover comes flext on the list with 163243 Sir Dixon had fortyone winners while the immortal Hanover had but twentyone Blue Girl Blues George Arnold Six Shooter Sir Oliver and Feme Sole were Sir Dixons largest winners while Abe Frank Compute King Hanover Hernando Toddy Flying Torpedo and Yankee wore the best of Han ¬ overs get Sir Dixons get also won 41244 abroad and Hanovers 20757 Starters Richard Dwyer and J J Holtman have closed a contract to do the barrier work at Windsor Can for five weeks commencing August 25 next They will alternate at Windsor the same as they are now doing at Oakland J J Holtman was compelled to refuse an offer to do the starting at the Nashville meeting which commences on April 24 as the Oakland season will not close until
